To not take the dog so I get a bit of a break?!

We have a family get together tomorrow - they’ve said to bring the dog along and they all want the dog there but in all honesty I can’t imagine anything worse.

The host is very house conscious so I’d constantly be having to follow the dog around making sure she doesn’t go in certain places etc and it means I don’t get to sit down and actually chill out (she is a young dog so won’t just lay down and sleep etc).

I’ve mentioned leaving the dog at home but a couple of people have got a bit shitty about it saying it’s not fair to leave her at home but I’m just creating more work for myself and I usually take her along everywhere - AIBU to want a bit of a break for once? I think I would feel more relaxed about it if the host wasn’t so strict about things but it’s her house and I respect her rules

It's your dog, you and only you get to decide where it goes and you don't have to explain or pacify any rude relatives if they don't like it.

Fiddlerdragon · 03/06/2023 19:17

I’d leave the dog at home. If the relatives get shitty about it offer them to sit at yours and dog sit

ECJW85 · 03/06/2023 19:20

Thank you - I think I’m going to stick to my guns! A little example - they would get shitty if he went to the toilet in certain parts of the garden - and I’m not spending my afternoon patrolling where my dog wees outside! Xx

When you decide to get a dog just like having a child you know you can not leave the dog alone for more than about 2 hours...less if it's not used to it. So dog goes with you or you arrange a sitter.

CherryBlossomPants · 03/06/2023 19:22

It depends on how long you plan to leave the dog alone? A few hours perfectly fine as long as the dog is conditioned to that. 6 hours plus absolutely not.

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 03/06/2023 19:23

Yabu to leave your ddog at home all day when taking is a viable option.

How long will you be leaving the dog?

ECJW85 · 03/06/2023 19:25

It’s only about 10 minutes away from where I live and for around 3-4 hours at most but I can easily pop in and check on ddog whenever, but definitely won’t be longer than that x

I leave my dog at home loads. He likes going on a walk then going back to bed. He doesn’t like strange places, crowds, noise, being told where he is allowed to sit. I don’t think dogs* enjoy half the “dog friendly” things they are carted about to.

I totally understand where you're coming from. My two young dogs can be hard work especially in a new environment. It's literally like having toddlers into are into everything!
They will be fine at home in fact the weather is meant to be really warm so probably better for them rather than panting in someone's garden.

purpleboy · 03/06/2023 21:20

Just keep dog on a lead.

LovelyLooby · 03/06/2023 21:26

10 minutes away. Why don’t you do half and half. Arrive without the dog. Say it was sleeping and you didn’t want to disturb it but you will go and get it in a couple of hours.
