Not allowed in Iceland because I had shopping bags??

Went into Iceland this morning after visiting two other shops. I was carrying one bag with items in from the other shops and one empty shopping bag.
I was approached by the security guard who told me I wasn't allowed to bring bags into the shop. Don't know if it was because of the full bag or the empty bag or both.
I responded 'Really??', he said 'yes'. I wasn't in the mood for an argument so just left to go and buy ice creams elsewhere.
Is this a thing in shops now or did I just encounter an over zealous security employee?

The title of this thread makes it sound like you weren't allowed in the COUNTRY because of the bags.

PerfectYear321 · 06/06/2023 17:37

I'm guessing it's because it's a cheapie shop.

Like Home Bargains has a huge cardboard cut-out of a police officer at the front of the store

Needmorelego · 06/06/2023 17:47

@PerfectYear321 Iceland is just a supermarket - not a "cheapie shop" 🙄

It sells very cheap food

ALongHardWinter · 06/06/2023 18:17

How exactly are you meant to carry your shopping from previous shops then?! How bizarre.

spudulike1 · 06/06/2023 18:18

I go into Iceland with bags, fill them up and then empty them onto the conveyor belt. Never been a problem

Well clearly according to their own response you're obviously not allowed to enter their store unless you either drive in or you visit the shop first and risk your shopping defrosting if you dare to want to visit other shops afterwards.

Totally logical...

Needmorelego · 06/06/2023 18:20

@PerfectYear321 it's not that cheap. I do my main food shop there. It's on average the same as any of the "big four" supermarkets.

Oh, right. I don't know why it's got that reputation then

Needmorelego · 06/06/2023 18:34

@PerfectYear321 I don't know why it has that reputation either.
But then again a lot of people seem to think all they sell is frozen ready meals.
I spent £40 in Iceland yesterday and only 2 items were frozen (ice cream and quorn mince).

I work in retail and having empty bags is a red flag. Though the dodgy ones round here prefer a massive sports direct bag!
We just keep an eye on them.

@Afolnerd it's not a red flag, it's common bloody sense! They stopped giving away bags, the started charging for the cheap bags, then stopped those & now really only sell bags for life type bags I. Most places. Do you think we should pay for 'bags for life' in every bloody shop, every time???

Needmorelego · 06/06/2023 18:44

@SuperbSummer2023 there's a big difference between someone walking around with a open, large Sports Direct bag and someone with a few neatly folded flat bags that are sat in the bottom of the trolley.
It definatly is a red flag to walk around with a giant open Sports Direct bag !
@tulippa I shop at various branches of Iceland regularly and they've never had a policy of not allowing bags in. You must have just had the bad luck of a branch that must be having a lot of shoplifting at the moment so they need to do something.

I did clarify what I meant I few posts further on. Of course people bring in shopping bags and they should. It’s when people are walking around with big empty shopping bags fully open. It it’s very easy for them to slip something into the bag when they think no one is looking and a common tactic of shoplifters. So retail staff will look out for it.

Ahsoka2001 · 06/06/2023 22:30

Iceland are utter twats. In 2018 I was stopped at the exit of the Woolwich branch for having a plastic bag. The security guard asked me if I had taken anything and I said no, cause that was the truth. He asked, "Then what is that?" gesturing to my bag and I showed him that it was a complete boxset of Avatar: The Last Airbender I had purchased from CEX just before.

Knowing full well that Iceland doesn't sell Avatar DVDs he waved me out of the store without apology or admitting he was wrong. I would've been upset if I had been younger but by that time I had the strength to laugh the whole thing off. What a knob

@@Afolnerd yes, I see that now, sorry.

they'd love me! I often use a bag for life when I'm shopping if I don't need much! I find them easier to carry & cleaner than baskets!

@Needmorelego

yeah, but the sports direct bag business wasn't in the post I replied to.

Needmorelego · 06/06/2023 23:03

@SuperbSummer2023 ah yes apologies - it was @Afolnerd who said about a Sports Direct bag.

It sells very cheap food

It did many years ago but not now.
I recently went in to one and was shocked at their prices.
Maybe that's the reason lots are closing

PickAChew · 06/06/2023 23:18

I popped into our newish home bargains, last week, followed by the also newish food warehouse (big Iceland) next door. I left FW empty handed because anything ivd been interested in was much cheaper at Home Bargains and already on my bag (with receipt, thankfully!)

I was most annoyed that it was almost impossible to get out of the store.

Dogs4Ever · 06/06/2023 23:33

I got followed around a very large Sainsbury's with my Assistance Dog yesterday. Not sure what security thought I could stash in the small pockets of his harness vest... 🙄 Round and round the store the man followed me, I was very pleased when I eventually ditched him by doubling back and dashing across an aisle 😂

MonumentalLentil · 06/06/2023 23:56

Some years ago I went into a large late night chemist, one that sold all kinds of interesting things and that I would often go into for a browse and come out with loads of stuff I didn't need which I always paid for.

This particular night I was with someone and we had got the bus as we were going back to my house with one of those big bags that people used to take their washing to the launderette, it was full of paperwork.

There were no other customers in the shop and I was planning to buy several things so was wandering from one aisle to another looking for them. Every time I changed aisle my companion dragged along behind me with the huge bag instead of staying out of the way and stood at the end of the aisles. I found I was hemmed in at every aisle by friend at one end and a staff member at the other. I kept going until I found what I wanted and it took a lot longer than it needed to.

I actually slowed down a lot and took even longer before wandering to the till to pay. I wish I had asked them to look after the damn bag on reflection but was tired after a shitty day and not looking forward to the prospect of going through the paperwork in the bag that night.

I never went back to that chemist, and will never forget the man nipping about like a frog in the rain trying to catch me stealing. I didn't even have a bag and friend wasn't even in the aisles, just at the end of them. So unpleasant.
