Holiday cottage: what resolution would you expect?

We’ve paid for a large holiday cottage, certainly at the higher price point. Lovely in many ways, but not happy with the cleaning. It’s otherwise beautiful

In the kitchen the dishwasher is unusable, it has a thick chalky residue. Most the crockery, cutlery and glassware is also covered. It’s not an easy wash off, I had to use vinegar on the cutlery and it requires a proper scrub. After a long drive I’m a bit annoyed at having a massive clean up. Even the kettle needed a scrub.

For extra annoyance it allows pets, and the kids have trodden in dog poo. It’s a tiny garden, but has about 3 poos. I’ve had to clean up.

I messaged on arrival, got a message the dishwasher would be sorted ‘asap’, but no comment on the washing pile I had to do before dinner. It’s a lovely place, just not checked. Even had to wash the cutlery tray in the drawer as it’s full of bits. Upstairs is clean and normal- I’m hardly precious about cleaning, but I’m annoyed at the kitchen.

Aibu in wanting the dishwasher done straight away, dog poo collecting and a clean of the crockery?

If I had to pick up dog shit on my holiday id expect money tbh.

That is fucking rank as.

Bunsandtophats · 03/06/2023 15:14

I too would be absolutely furious about the dog poo. Totally unacceptable and I would expect full recompense. Can't believe people think this is not really a problem. Some people's hygiene standards leave me 😯

MrsKeats · 03/06/2023 15:21

What company is this?
I am having a bet about which one. I've given up getting anywhere with problems we had at a cottage.

BungleandGeorge · 03/06/2023 15:29

Dog poo totally unacceptable they usually charge extra for dogs to cover the extra cost of cleaning. It’s a health hazard too. The dirty cutlery/crockery is inconvenient. How much compensation would depend on amount paid. How much is the dog charge?

Newspeaker · 03/06/2023 16:08

If this is with Sykes you'll get nowhere. Best to vote with your feet and never book with them again. Be careful if using booking.com because they sell cottages through there.

Roselilly36 · 03/06/2023 16:27

That isn’t on, we own a holiday let, get onto the management company.

IamRoyFuckingKent · 03/06/2023 16:30

I’d be pissed off and would expect a cleaner to be sent. I don’t clean at home, I don’t expect to do it on holiday

Hannahsbananas · 03/06/2023 16:34

Dog poo not nice but easily cleared up (by yourself)
What?? I’d be incandescent at a garden full of dogshit!
I would absolutely not be cleaning it up myself, can you even be serious?

I don’t have a dog. Tbh I missed the thing about pets being allowed

I can understand it being annoying the washing up, but that’s something I can imagine as an oversight.

the dog poo I would find revolting even though I have dogs. Would want them to clear and check the garden and, although I wouldn’t ask, would expect some sort of apology for that like flowers / champagne or chocolates as that really does affect the vibe of a house having covered it poo… 😆

Saucery · 03/06/2023 17:04

I have a dog, choose dog friendly cottages and still wouldn’t want to pick up anyone else’s dog shit from the garden. 🤮 I’d probably ask for someone from the cleaning team to come round and have a check and clean up if I found any. That’s what part of the extra charge for having a dog in a property is used for, I assume. Or it should be.

MrsKeats · 04/06/2023 10:52

That's who I was referring to news
Awful company.

weirdas · 04/06/2023 10:57

I'd expect the cleaning bill taking off the price. I probably wouldn't use the dishwasher and I'd leave a honest review

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/06/2023 11:11

Is it Air BNB or a holiday cottage company?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/06/2023 11:12

The knife if from touching other silverware while in the dishwasher, easily reminded but should've been cleaned before you arrived along with the dog poo 🤢

ditalini · 04/06/2023 11:20

The dog poo would really piss me off. If you're going to be a dog friendly property then you need to accept that it means extra cleaning and that includes the garden.

Some people are mucky buggers and for mucky dog owners it includes not cleaning up after their pets. It should never be the responsibility of the next guests to do that.

BigShoutyRaven · 04/06/2023 11:37

I got £100 quid off last year for a house that had clean sheets but nothing else - think toothpaste spit on the sink, toenails on the living room floor, food under the dining table. They'd offered to "try to find" a cleaner to come round but that was at 7pm and I wanted to drive home unpack and eat, not hang around on the off chance they could get someone in and then end up cleaning at 11pm anyway. Then once we'd cleaned we tried to eat and found the state of the plates and cutlery which looked like someone had just put them back after using them, and that got me another £50 off.
