To feel like a fake Irish woman?

So I was born in Ireland. All my grand parents and great grand parents born in Ireland. But before that, only about 1/4 of them are from Irish families. Rest of them moved over from England to Dublin (as a huge number did). So ‘genetically’ I’m only 1/4 Irish.

My parents gave me a very very Irish name. Sent me to Gaelic school etc.

I now live in England. People always sort of view me as being Irish Irish. But I feel like a fraud, because compared to many Irish folk, I’m not. I didn’t know this out until I did my family tree, and now I just sort of feel deflated.

You never know, the English side could have migrated from Ireland to England years before, many did and then migrated back years down the line. You'll never truly know as a lot of records go missing, but you're definitely Irish.

My family are Irish and have lived there to the point we can't trace it back any further. I however, moved to the UK as a child and have an English accent now, everyone I know just sees me as English.

So, I feel a little lost with my identity also but it's out of my control and I enjoy telling people my nationality when I can.

I suppose I can see why you feel weird about it if you had some kind of pride in being Irish going back to the time of St Patrick. Most people don't think like that though and I can see why some people would find it offensive though that you would separate people out into Irish and Irish Irish.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 02/06/2023 21:33

It’s understandable because I would love to be more Irish…I’m not sure why… I’m only 1 eighth.

My sons are 1 quarter Irish (from dad) plus 1 sixteenth (from me) and they’re considered Irish citizens even though they’ve never been to Ireland. My youngest DS actually looks very Irish facially.

Chickenkeev · 02/06/2023 21:38

Such a bizarre claim 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

TheMurderousGoose · 02/06/2023 21:44

I dunno, I think you can sometimes spot an Irish face.

Gabriel Byrne to me looks very Irish. Or if I was in NYC and saw someone who looked like, say Hector Ó hEochagáin, walking towards me I'd think 'this fella's deffo Irish'.

It's incredibly irritating. We don't look anything, we're not a homogenous group. We're people no more than the brits or the yanks or the french.we're just normal, boring, bog standard people! breathes out

That's an absolute load of bollox. Confirmation bias or whatever there is absolutely no way you can tell an irish person that way. Rubbish.

You think French and Irish people look the same? Some of them sure, but in general, nope.

Everybody looks the fucking same! It varies between cities and countries but everyone looks the same.

To clarify; it’s just you.

Not an actual “thing” at all.

Everyone looks the same except when they don't? Exactly. People from Clare don't generally look like people from Sardinia.

I don’t care whether they do or don’t but you can’t have it both ways! How people look varies between Countries and Cities but they all look the same??! 😂

dropthevipers · 02/06/2023 21:54

can you not just self identify as Irish? It's all the rage these days. Gets coat.

MrsCobbit · 02/06/2023 21:55

Are you normally such a worrier ?Have you considered anxiety medication or simply stopping your over-thinking

I’ve been doing that since long before it became fashionable 😁

To be fair to me both my parents were born and bred Irish. I mainly identify as Irish because I love the rugby team, Kimberley biscuits, that Tiffin chocolate bar thing and potato cakes.

minus 1 point for speaking positively about Kimberley biscuits, the driest biscuits known to woman. Like eating sand!

That’s why they also cover them in chocolate.

TheMurderousGoose · 02/06/2023 22:02

yeah but the chocolate only improves them by half a percentage point.

eggandonion · 02/06/2023 22:06

I used to love a nice tiffin. Irish cadburys was far superior.
You can tell irish men abroad by the faint whiff of tayto and the gaa top. Some of them have big Irish heads on them. (Looking at you bil).
