Bluebellgray - quote for made to measure curtains - practically fainted

Okay so I love Bluebellgray. Have 3 pairs of their curtains already and several cushions. Looking for new bedroom curtains and loved one of their fabrics 'summer'. They seem to be doing less and less ready made curtains which is a shame because although they are not cheap at around £220 for the full length and full width ones (227 x 227cm) they are affordable for alot of people.

So anyway I asked for a quote to get a pair of curtains made in the summer fabric which was actually one of their cheaper fabrics (around £56 per metre compared to some that are £98 were metre). I asked for them in their standard size of 227 x 227 with normal linings and normal pencil pleat. So nothing out of the ordinary - just like the ready made ones but in this fabric which they don't have ready made curtains in.

Okay so my AIBU is going to be - AIBU to be shocked at this price?

Before we decide this lets have some guesses as to the quote.

So the curtains I already have which are same size, in equally nice fabric but ready made not made to measure cost me around £220 per pair. JL currently have them in sale for slightly less.

So now that we know the ready made ones are around £220 per pair for the 227x227 size what do we think having the same size of curtains made is another fabric would cost?

Anyone like to guess?

You need to work out cost per time you draw them over years of happy use :)

I'm not shocked because when I priced up for JL to make a pair of curtains that cost £200 ready made, the ones in the same material but shorter as the ready made were too long were about £1k, I decided I would buy the ready made and shorten them myself

I spent about 1k on MTM curtains before. They’re about 11 years old and I still see them as “new”. Honestly I don’t see any reason why I won’t own them for decades and decades to come. They are thick and well lined and beautiful.

I used to make my curtains, I’d find expensive fabrics in cheap outlets. I covered an Edwardian chaise langue.

now I’m retired and so lucky to have some savings, I’ve ordered through John Lewis, very expensive beautiful fabric, huge high window so loads of fabric. Over £1000 but as my grannie might have said - I love them and they’ll out,I’ve me.
in most other ways I’m a cheap date and I’m unreasonably pleased with them. Plus, they hand so much better than if I’d made them

thanks to everyone who has contributed to the thread. Lots of people not shocked at the price so I am clearly out of touch with the cost of mtm curtains. In my defence I have never had curtains made for me so it's been a learning curve.

A few of you shocked at the price so at least I'm not alone.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas which I will consider. And thanks to those who posted photos for me of curtains I was considering because you already own them.

I wasn't shocked at yours because I had already had the shock with mine

Baldieheid · 02/06/2023 18:34

I'm shocked the quote was so cheap actually. I sometimes make curtains and they're hard and heavy work to do. Handsewn interlined version, you'd be tripling that price, minimum. I know its a big expense but you're not being ripped off at that price, it's fair.

So the conclusion to the story if anyone is interested is I decided I quite liked the foxlease curtains on John Lewis (need yellow and pink in curtains as this is my current duvet colours ). The white have been sold out for ages. I decided I liked the dark ones the best and annoying they have just been in the sale and are sold out apart from smaller ones. I went on ebay and lo and behold someone is selling JL curtains 228x228 brand new in ones I want.

They probably bought them in sale for £100 and making a nice wee profit of £30 so fair enough. Or maybe they are JL returns and they buy them cheap.

Don't mind. I got curtains I liked at a reasonable price with blackout linings. Here they are.

Assuming the curtains are as advertised (seller is 100% on reviews) I am happy.

Glad you got sorted.
