Is this rude?

My neighbour had his daughter visiting. During this time my friend came to pick up son to take him out.

whilst she was parked outside my house waiting for my son, daughter who was visiting neighbour appeared, tapped on friends car window and asked ‘are you lost?’, my friend replied ‘no just waiting for someone’, daughter then said ‘oh I thought you may be lurking around checking out the neighbourhood!’

Daughter doesn’t even live here! Who does this? Surely this is abnormal?

I think your reaction is a bit disproportionate. It isn't that unreasonable to question if someone is okay or lost if they are sitting weirdly in a car for a period of time in a residential area.

WimpoleHat · 02/06/2023 09:18

I think the daughter was just a bit gauche. I’ve sometimes asked people locally if I can help/if they’re lost if I’ve thought they might be “casing the joint”, but it’s rather crass to admit openly that that’s what you’re doing! Possibly the neighbour was alarmed to see someone he didn’t know and sent his daughter to ask and she just lacked a bit of sophistication in the way she did it.

funinthesun19 · 02/06/2023 09:30

I think coming out of her dad’s house and tapping on someone’s car window is a bit busy body territory to be honest. To then admit to why she did it is just makes it even worse.

Paperlate · 02/06/2023 09:32

Depends really. Maybe the daughter was joking with your friend? I think it's ok to ask if someone is lost.

Clingfilm · 02/06/2023 09:35

Sounds like the daughter was trying to be helpful (she might not live there now but maybe grew up there?) and I doubt your friend looks like a typical burglar so the comment would have been in jest to end an awkward conversation.

KarmaStar · 02/06/2023 09:42

No not rude

slowrunner07 · 02/06/2023 10:11

I would assume that she was trying to be helpful and then made a joke.

MisschiefMaker · 02/06/2023 14:15

Sounds rude to me

CC4712 · 02/06/2023 14:17

How old is neighbours daughter?

How old is neighbours daughter?

About 60

😂I thought you were going to say that the neighbours daughter was 6yrs old- not 60!!! You could have mentioned that in the OP. And is your own son 50 perhaps 😂

I don’t see our neighbours daughters age was relevant. I think it was obvious in the op I was referring to an adult. My son is 11.

Someone sitting in a car, outside a house, could be lost.
There have been a million threads advising OPs to "log it with 101" when people dare to sit in cars on residential streets.
Wouldn't give it a second thought.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 02/06/2023 15:46

Nah that's weird.

MasterBeth · 02/06/2023 15:50

A bit odd. Not really rude.

CalistoNoSolo · 02/06/2023 16:33

Not rude, just batshit. Who is going to admit they're up to no good anyway?

neslop · 02/06/2023 16:38

To me the most abnormal thing about this is to think this incident is worth posting about?!

Maddy70 · 02/06/2023 16:39

What an overreaction from you

Awrite · 02/06/2023 16:48

I too thought your op read like the visiting daughter was a child.

No harm done, not worth getting upset about.

(Not saying you are upset.)

I8toys · 02/06/2023 17:39

That's weird.
