Thinking of the Bournemouth Lifeguards today after yesterday's terrible tragedy.

What they must be going through today and probably forever is unimaginable.

We've been on Lifeguard manned beaches this week and as always I'm in awe of their work.

Thank you for your service.

Really? That’s not great. In Ireland they are employed by the local authorities/councils.

Anoisagusaris · 01/06/2023 11:50

Oh I see you mean the RNLI. The RNLI here doesn’t provide lifeguard services on beaches. Just rescue services.

ThankYouLifeGuards · 01/06/2023 11:51

I think they get minor Local Authority funding but mostly from voluntary contributions.

They provide lifeguard services at lots of beaches too Anoisagusaris you can find which ones here https://rnli.org/what-we-do/lifeguards-and-beaches

The RNLI beach I go to has a card machine reader so I always donate on that.

Seeline · 01/06/2023 12:04

Most of the RNLI lifeboat crews are volunteers too. They have 'day' jobs as well.

SeatonCarew · 01/06/2023 12:07

They are a fantastic organisation with wonderful volunteers.

Thanks for reminding us.

They are volunteers as Health and Safety would prevent them as employees from putting themselves in danger I understand. Same as Mountain rescue, Cave rescue and so on. It is deliberate.

A fantastic organisation.

massistar · 01/06/2023 13:12

My DS is an RNLI beach lifeguard this summer. Absolutely invaluable service and they often pull people out of the water. A tragedy like this will be devastating for them.

massistar · 01/06/2023 13:12

They are paid by the RNLI. Not volunteers.

NotAMug · 01/06/2023 13:15

We do a regular monthly payment for RNLI as they do provide our lifeguards at our local beach. I have teens and they spend most days from May onwards at the beach with friends so its really important to us.

I’m not in the UK. The RNLI operates rescue services in Ireland too. Fabulous service in my area and well supported. I know a few of the volunteers.

As far as I know they don’t provide lifeguards on beaches anywhere in Ireland - as in the Republic of Ireland (open to correction on that!).

How do the fire service get round that one?

SquirmOfEels · 01/06/2023 19:27

And the RNLI cover the tidal Thames, so that's right through central London.

I thought they were independent because they wanted to be.

(After all, fire service, police and military regularly go in to life threatening situations)
