New version of scam - worth being aware?

Not an AIBU but putting this here so that hopefully more will see it

Just had three recorded message calls, claiming to be from my bank's fraud department (though bank not named) saying there have been two attampts at suspicious withdrawals and "press 1 to speak to someone"

The difference is that, instead of being a withheld/unidentified number, it showed a landline one with my own city's dialling code - didn't know they could do that Hmm

Anyway thought it might be worth mentioning; the number's invalid of course, but didn't want anyone to get taken in by such a call appearing to be a local one

Not that new, these have been going for a couple of years

Thank you for mentioning this, op. I hadn't heard of this one before.

It’s possible to set a number that looks local but isn’t.
Telesales companies do it to make you more likely to answer

I might have known Blush

As said, I did know the call itself was a scam, but hadn't realised they could make a number appear local ...

They can unfortunately. I picked up the phone just this week to a local number and it was clearly a suspicious call.

Elvis1956 · 31/05/2023 21:42

They can also duplicate your banks number and often ask you to check it against the number on the back of your card....bastards

chupachucks · 31/05/2023 21:42

They can make VO-IP calls and just spoof any number they like and even digital id.

Best way to not get scammed let all unrecognised calls not in your caller list go to voicemail. If it's important they will leave a message. Then you can phone your own bank directly if they claim to be bank ect.

Answering to scammers informs them the line is active and in use. So they can either target you further , sell this information or record your voice if you answer / speak.

Definitely worth sharing thank you

Scams get tweaked every now and then, so what was relevant 2 years ago will take a slightly different form now. So thanks to@Puzzledandpissedofffor the tip-off on this version of the scam. It really doesn't hurt to make posts like this :-)

LadyWithLapdog · 31/05/2023 21:54

Thanks, good to know

ThinWomansBrain · 31/05/2023 22:03

i'd expect a call from a bank to be from a national looking number rather than a local one any way.

someone hacked my bank account yesterday & I got this really dodgy looking text that turned out to be genuine from my bank - it required a reply & they were trying to charge a premium rate to text back. I didn't text, I called them,

Soapyspuds · 31/05/2023 22:14

Thanks for the reminder to all.

I have always been told to phone your bank from another phone after you suspect a possible scammer has phoned. There are scams where the scammer phones you and then does not hangup so somehow you connect back to them instead of getting through to your bank.

SmileLikeUMeanIt · 31/05/2023 22:18

I once got a spam call from my own phone number!

cakewench · 31/05/2023 22:49

We’ve had two of these just today on our landline! I don’t suppose yours mentioned Western Union and Amazon charges?

The annoying thing is HSBC’s actual fraud phone calls sound so suspicious btw. It’s been a couple of years since I had one from them, but they immediately ask you for all kinds of identifying information without any sort of assurance that they are who they say they are. I always end up having to ring back on the number on the card and it ends up taking ages, but surely they should have an identification number or code they use when they ring. They always imply people are gullible for falling for scams but they really aren’t much different when they call.

HappiestSleeping · 31/05/2023 22:58

Unfortunately it is very possible to spoof the calling line identity (caller ID). This can be done to make the caller look like they are local, or even to mimic a real number.

Usual rules apply, if anyone ever phones purporting to be from any organisation and tries to get you to give information, hang up and call back using the number on your statement.

The scammers are getting much more believable unfortunately.
