Kitchen near light source in open plan or not?

Here is the most recent plan for our renovation. I am
happy but one thing I am not sure about is the position of living and kitchen.

part of me thinks the kitchen should be near the light source but apart of me thinks it’s nice to sit in the sun.

wwydu - keep as existing image or swap kitchen and living?

Kitchen near light source in open plan or not?

Also if we swap them over we can keep the original Victorian fireplace exploded

I think I'd keep the kitchen where it is but swap over the position of the living room and dining room. Then kitchen/diner are more zoned off and you won't have to be sidling past sofas with all your plates etc.

I'd swap the kitchen and Dining room.

We have our kitchen and dining areas near our large sliders and the living room part in the darker side of the room. I'm very happy with the layout as we tend to sit in the living area more in the evening anyway. I also think it makes sense to have your kitchen closer to the dining area.

I wouldn't swap kitchen and living as you'll end up with your sofas in a dark corner where you have to walk through the kitchen to get to them. Also it will limit greatly the number of cabinets you can have because of the windows - a corner is great as you can cover the wall in cabinets. Just put spotlights over the kitchen and make sure you have a decent extractor fan.

I would consider swapping living and dining, as it makes much more sense to have the kitchen next to your dining area. I can't see the measurements on the plan but it looks like your kitchen island is pretty much on top of a sofa at the moment - you need space to pull the chairs out and still walk between furniture. In general check the measurements with your own/planned furniture as I've found that generally the furniture printed on plans vastly underestimates the actual space needed for the furniture (same with kitchen - where is the fridge going?)

I agree with PP that I wouldn't move the kitchen! The light will flow into the room, and like said above the cabinets can't go on windows so you'll loose functional space.

I actually wouldn't swap the dining and living spaces around - is that little grey square a supporting column in the diagram? That would reduce the living space and I think the larger space works best for living as you've got it and the smaller section for dining.

I can't cope with a dark kitchen so would move that to the light. In fact I would move it all round.

My sitting room general only gets used in the evening so would move that to the dark corner with the fireplace for cosy evenings. It would be a shame to loose the fireplace.

With the kitchen next to the dining room it becomes a more sociable area.

BogRollBOGOF · 31/05/2023 08:44

What's the orientation, and what times of day do you use the kitchen?

Do you use the kitchen much during daylight hours?

I'd favour having the dining next to the kitchen- less carrying of plates around!

BeetyAxe · 31/05/2023 08:57

I would swap it all around, have the kitchen next to the utility and then the dining beside the kitchen, with the living area in the darker corner. What do you use the living area for? If it’s watching tv it’s better that it’s in a darker area or it will be more difficult to see the tv. I imagine you’ll mostly use your kitchen in the day time and it would be nicer if it’s brighter. Also better to keep original features like the fireplace if you can.
