Finally the truth: breed type is a factor in dog aggression

So there is now pretty large data set and research showing that dog breed is a major factor in aggression.

Surprise (not) the most aggressive are the Fighting dogs (American Bulldog, American Bully, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Cane Corso, Dogo Argentino and Presa Canario).

(Yes I know bad owners are also factor)

The most AGGRESSIVE dog breeds revealed - is YOUR pooch on the list?

Somewhat unsurprisingly, researchers from the University of Helsinki found that fighting dogs are the most aggressive.

According to people on here chihuahuas are the most dangerous 🙄

SilverOrchid · 30/05/2023 22:26

I can’t believe dachshunds are on the least aggressive list. They usually too aggressive lists and are a reactive breed. They’re unlikely to be dangerous but I wouldn’t say they’re a placid breed.

Ricco12 · 30/05/2023 22:28

But that article is about dog on dog aggression ..I think it’s pretty obvious a dog bred to fight another dog will be the most aggressive dog towards other dogs.

It isn’t a study about aggression toward people though.? You realise that yes.

PuffinsRocks · 30/05/2023 22:30

And this is why none of these ridiculous breeds ever get banned. 🙄 Sigh.

The minute anything comes out about dogs and the UK public reacts the way Americans react about guns. They run out and buy the biggest and most dangerous ones they can think of.

Wildlyboring · 30/05/2023 22:32

The top 3 in that thumbnail scare the shit out of me. They're so muscular.

Janie1962 · 30/05/2023 22:32

Three Labradors consistently try to attack my poor Jack Russell - they obviously haven't read the results of the study yet 😕

MoroccanRoseHChurch · 30/05/2023 22:35

I’m NOT normally a mirror reader, but I saw the headline today about the boy who was killed about 18 months ago by an XL Bully and god it made me sad.

the article followed up that 15 people have been killed since that boy was. Guess how many were killed by a Dachshund or a retriever?

OliviaFlaversham · 30/05/2023 22:36

I am not generally fearful of dogs but those top three I find frightening and would be terrified if one bounded over to me in a park. They are clearly capable of doing so much damage

nobodysdaughternow · 30/05/2023 22:40

I would cross the road to avoid those breeds and would never go into a house where the resident dog could attack.

People saying about labradors and dashhounds attacking - if you or your dog came away with all limbs in tact, you/your dog were not attacked.

Cluckycluck · 30/05/2023 22:53

@nobodysdaughternow So you don't go into any houses with a dog then? Considering that all dogs are unpredictable and capable of attack?

What a ridiculous thing to say that if you/your dog hasn't lost a limb you haven't been attacked.

SirenSays · 30/05/2023 22:54

I've never seen anyone claim those dogs are great with other dogs but then it's not surprising to see daily fail reporting the obvious as news.

CarCrazy · 30/05/2023 22:59

What the hec is a 'tea cup' dog!! I know they r listed as aggressive, but sounds so cute!!!!

No one said that breed isn't a factor. What a lot of people say (and I agree with) is that some dog breeds like staffies get a bad reputation for being aggressive when the majority of them are fine. Most dogs, including those that are classed as a dangerous breed, do not pose a threat to the public if they are cared for properly and kept under control. It is normally a mixture of breed and bad, irresponsible ownership that leads to dog attacks. But mostly bad ownership.

HellsAngel81 · 30/05/2023 23:00

As a registered vet nurse, I have been bitten by multiple chihuahuas, yorkies and collies.

Never have I been bitten by any of the bully patients. We have a few american bully patients and so far they have all been very sweet, and a dream to handle. And our staffie patients are some of my favourites. But then they are (mostly) accompanied by sensible and responsible owners.

I don’t doubt you - chihuahua’s, Yorkshire terriers and collies are often owned by people who don’t understand the breeds and treat them correctly. This causes anxiety and skittish behaviour.

The difference between the above and the bull breeds, also very often owned by the wrong people, is when they bite, they’re not likely to rip your arm off or kill you.

I don’t assume all large, powerful breeds are dangerous but they do all pose a greater potential threat than other breeds. I met a very lovely bull terrier whilst walking my dog this evening.

XenoBitch · 30/05/2023 23:06

The truth... from the Daily Mail 🙄

GwinCoch · 30/05/2023 23:09

The problem with the question of dangerous dogs is that the law is clear. There is also anecdotal evidence on the sides of many breeds and it is super emotive. Hoping to get a rescue Shiba Inu from the meat markets this or next year.

Nothing2lose · 30/05/2023 23:14

I pray they ban the bully breeds unless some sort of special licence is brought in. God knows what that licence would be. I’m a dog owner but terrified of those.
allost all of the deaths since that young boy a year ago have been by American Bully XL.- yes I’m sure there are some responsible owners.

the difference is- if one of those turns you can’t stop it. If a small dog “turns” you’re likely an injury but not death.

Yes, the dog I was walking was just affectionally bitten and nearly killed by two other dogs... not attacked though as she didn't lose any legs Hmm

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-12127665/The-dog-breeds-really-mans-best-friend-list.html

this is what the Daily Fail said a few days ago….. bill terrier breeds were the friendliest….

Number 22 on the friendliest dog list is "other breed" and mixed breed on the features on the unfriendly list. Other or mixed breed could be anything. Just goes to show headlines often don't reflect the story.

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 30/05/2023 23:22

I hope they ban them soon. I was on a train recently and someone came on with one of these giant bully dogs. He stood in the vestibule with it and it was so so big. I absolutely love dogs, love a staffie even. But this dog was insane. It was like he was standing there with a loaded gun or a hatchet or something. I had my toddlers with me and I was afraid to take them past to the toilet.
