To think that new hob should not get hot exvept for the rings?

Hello Mumsnetters. Hoping your wisdom can help me out. Today had a new hob installed to replace old one that had given up after 11 years of good use. The new one is a glass induction model with touch controls, not knobs like my old one. Tonight cooked a meal, then rings were turned off but the surface of the hob is quite hot. Is this safe? I am also not too thrilled that a small amount of water that dripped from pan lids has left a dull foggy mark. Any advice very welcome.

Yes the induction plate stays hot for a few mins after cooking and you will need to wipe up stains. Sounds normal to me unless the mark is permanent?

GwinCoch · 30/05/2023 21:25

Yes it’s normal and it should have an ‘H’ display to tell you that it’s still hot. No big deal, just wait for it cool down and wipe clean. It can’t go from hot to cold in seconds.

I may not have been clear. The H shows that the rings are still hot for a while, that is OK, but what concerns me is that the whole surface between the rings is quite hot to touch too - this did not happen with my previous hob. The new hob is the same make as before and is the current equivalent model to the old one. Thanks everyone who replies.

I am a bit confused. Your old hob was an induction too?

bibbityboppityboo · 30/05/2023 21:43

Are your pans oversized for the rings? The pans radiate heat back onto the induction hob which is what makes it heat up, so I find on my mums if she uses a larger pot it heats the area around it too.

Exactly what I was thinking, pans overlapping the induction areas (and they don’t have to be static either, if you move them around during cooking, like to mix a stir fry then the same effect).

I am not sure about the old one being induction, as not sure what that means, but the instruction book for this hob says it is glass and I don't think my old one was glass, just black hard surface that never got hot apart from the rings. The booklet for the new hob that I read tonight before cooking, stressed that pans must be at least as wide as the rings, so I used a large pan that just covered the biggest ring.

If you DM me the front cover of the instruction book for your new job I promise to help. We’ve had a year of living in all manner of properties between me and my parents due to house sale issues. I currently have invection, they have normal electric glass. But take a photo of the cover, send me a pic and I am sure I can help. (Only if you want to of course). 😊

Hob not job! 😆

GalaApples · 30/05/2023 22:02

Have just found the booklet for the old hob. It was ceramic glass.

Yeah different types, old was glass electric and new is glass induction. Guessing you had to buy new pans for the new one? Basically it’s cold unless in contact sure a similarly magnetised pan, but if the pan overlaps the circle or is moved around then the heat transfers. Totally normal and usually cools down super quick too. Say five minutes as opposed to old gas elements that hold heat for much longer. Does that help? I don’t think anything is wrong with it.
