Proof of address for new employer

Sorry, but don't think there is a board for this situation. Also posting for traffic.

My DS is about to begin a new job. While he was between jobs he was living with us in France, but he gave his gf's address as his UK address as that was where he was spending his time while over there.

New employer is asking for proof of address, and DS can't show this for the address he gave. He isn't on his gf's lease.

Should he come clean and say he can't show proof of address for his UK address? Should he offer instead his French address (where he is not on the lease either, but at least he has the same last name as us...[? Will this be tricky for him?

He is currently flat-hunting and will hopefully have a proper abode very soon.

Thanks for advice!

If he's got the job I'd just explain the situation. It doesn't sound like he's been trying to deceive them, he's just stuck in an awkward situation. He should ask them if they have a work around.
We had a similar situation buying our last house as I couldn't prove my address (living in very temp accomodation, basically squatting) Rather uselessly I can't remember exactly what I did, but I think there may have been a sworn statement involved.

Could he go to his bank, change the address to his GFs and then have them print him a statement with the UK address? Or failing that, does he have a driving licence? It's free to change your address on them, but would have to wait for it in the post.

Depending on his employment check, he might have to give 3 years of addressed and dates in them so best to be honest and say he's updating his addresses and awaiting new documents that show it.

Thank you lampshade! You're right there must be a workaround to what is surely a fairly common occurrence. And yes, he's not been trying to mislead anyone.

I'll pass it on - thanks😀

Usually a bank statement is fine but it has to usually be printed and stamped

shockthemonkey · 30/05/2023 13:06

Oh OK Rockhop, thanks! Some great ideas there too. No driving license but the bank idea may well work, if the employer says this is a sticking point.

Really appreciate the pointers

My employer was a real stickler for proof of address's and because I conducted the interviews it was me that had to go over all the address, we require 3 different versions with the same address.
Once they applied they would be sent this request with a list of suitable documents that we could accept ( driving licence, tax bill, p45/60 gas ,electric, water, bill / statement TV licence, bank statement letter from hospital etc ) .This was then reiterate during the phone interview.
The amount of people that turned up with non matching / not enough address drove me mad.
If for some reason they couldn't provide the documents and they told me this in advance we can work around it . But only if we know in advance.

@shockthemonkey I would get your DS to explain the situation and see if they are willing to wait for him to get settled then proved a address .

I found the quickest ways were
Provision driving licence
Citizenship card
Enquire about applying for credit card ( don't need to go through with it )
Previous employer
Doctors letter

Some more great tips, Bakula. I know that at least some of these are do-able for him!

I moved to a new location & got a new job immediately, so I was light on the identification side

I provided to my new employer
Council tax bill at new location
Buying letters/bills of property at new location
Passport
Driving licence (had old address)
Bills from old address
All my original qualification certificates

This year we have had to go through the "right to work" in UK verification process, even people who have worked for the company for 25 years.

LIZS · 30/05/2023 14:28

What is the purpose of it? For Right to work his passport should do, for dbs or security checks he needs to give address over several years but no evidence. For id checks that is photo id such as provisional licence plus a bill, statement or official letter like hmrc. Not sure why a French address is an issue tbh, if he is moving for the role.

rose69 · 30/05/2023 14:41

Is he registered to vote. Electoral service can
Provide a pdf with proof of address.

Comefromaway · 30/05/2023 14:47

As Liz says, if it is Right to work checks he does not need to provide proof of address, simply proof of the right to work in the UK so his passport.

If it is for a DBS check he does need something with his current address on. I would suggest getting bank statements then using his passport and birth certificate for the other two forms of ID.

shockthemonkey · 31/05/2023 10:44

Thank you everyone! He has contacted the employer and there is a workaround, so that's great.

I don't think it could have been bout right to work as he had already shown his passport... and not likely to be DBS as his role won't require that.

You're right LIZS, no reason I can think of for not liking a French address, as long as he has UK nationality and is getting himself over there in time for day one! Lots of people relocate for work.
