If your baby had a tongue tie division…

How much of a difference did it make?

Baby is three weeks old and breastfeeding has been challenging for us. I had an emergency c section and was quite poorly for the first few days of his life so took a while for my milk to come in, he was losing weight so having to top up with formula.

I desperately want to EBF (no shade on those who FF, I just don’t want the extra faff of sterilising bottles etc).

Initially thought it was down to low supply but we were referred to the feeding clinic last week who diagnosed a tongue tie and have an appointment in three weeks for a division. So if you had this procedure done, how much of a difference did it make to you breastfeeding journey? I’m really hoping it’ll turn things around for us but also don’t want to pin all my hopes to it and end up disappointed, as not sure how much is the tongue tie and how much is down to low supply. Also considering going private to get a quicker appointment which I can afford but again not sure how much it’s worth it for the sake of three weeks. Help!

Mine are older now but 2 had the division an sit made an immediate and large difference. I'd definitely advise going ahead.

Both of mine were TT which we had treated privately and each went on to BF for over 3 years! It made a huge difference & I tell everyone I know who’s having a baby to look out for it.

As a PP said, there is a danger of it reattaching, but our TT specialist spoke to us about “wound massage” to prevent this happening, and my DH did this every night for a while to make sure that didn’t happen. I can’t remember how long for, it was probably a week or two, but ask your consultant about it.

Hope all goes well!

It made a bit of a difference but DD was never the right sort of breastfeeder. I have was lactation consultant friend who would laugh every time she saw DD feed as it was just so silly but I'd been feeding for 8 years by the time she came along so could cope with the weird attachment. The Tongue tie snip did mean she started to be able to feed to sleep which was better.

My baby was the same, looked like text book latch etc but he was losing weight and then was diagnosed with a tongue tie. Had it cut and instant improvement.

Mine had a mild to moderate tongue tie cut at 17 days old with the NHS. I found feeding very painful prior to the cut (dreaded every feed) but two weeks after it was cut he had relearned how to latch and it no longer hurt at all. Fed him EBF until he was 2yo.

I'd get it done privately as soon as possible as they are learning to feed. DD never properly unlearned her TT feeding pattern after the tie was snipped. We limped to feeding until she was 10 months but it was pretty much mixed feeding and only the odd comfort feed by the end. Her older sibling I fed for 12 months with no isses at all.

Where I am, the NHS don't offer any posterior tie cutting at all and the 24 hour baby check was carried out with dad, who couldn't accurately tell them how her feeding was going, in a different ward to me. I knew she wasn't feeding well but it was really hot when she was born and I kept being fobbed off with "oh she's drinking more because of the heat".

Made so much difference with my dc2. He didn’t get so much awful wind so could get to sleep more easily after a feed, and also had more milk and less air in his stomach so could sleep for better periods of time.

Went private though and had loads of support after the fact.
