Just been away for my siblings 50th birthday (they live abroad).

BA have lost my suitcase. I spent 4 days away, borrowing clothes from my sibling. The entire planes luggage got left in London, this was last Thurs.

This was not good for either of us as we are not the same size, and I had a lovely outfit for the party. Also had to keep washing the outfit I arrived in so I had something to wear. Had no make up, toiletries, medication, jewellery.m, clothes, underwear. This has caused me anxiety the entire trip and worrying about where all my things are, and spent a lot of time trying to get updates from BA which everyone I was with has got tired of.

I am now home and my suitcase is not. BA are doing fuck all other than directing me to their lost baggage tracker which has been updated twice, once when I reported it missing on Thursday and once today when my siblings address expired as the address for it to be couriered to.

AIBU to think this is not good enough, that’s my (and the whole planes) personal items and they should be doing their utmost to locate it, not just fobbing us on the the tracker?

Any Advice please?

Never ever put valuables or medication in your checked case. My jewellery, a change of clothes, medication and make up are in my hand luggage. My only liquid make up is mascara and foundation so both fit in the small bag. Lipstick, powders etc are all solid so don’t need to be separate .

If you are asked to check in your bag at the gate, they do target women for this(and specifically women over 40) as they are more likely to agree.

I'm a late 40s woman and I travel constantly for work, and have done for years - dozens of flights per year - and I've never seen that happening.

When there's insufficient space for all the carry-on bags, without fail they always estimate how many people in the queue they have space for, then from that point backwards they look for bags which are too big to go under seats, and people with multiple bags. Generalising, but more men travel on business and so more of them will be at the front of the gate queue either by dint of ticket class or loyalty status and when they're allowing, say, the first 30 people on with all bags then yes you're going to see them being allowed to keep their bags.

I've honestly never seen women specifically being singled out for having to check bags in at the gate.

They target by boarding group to ask you to check your luggage.
Yes- less woman are probably in group 1 as fewer are gold card holders but I have never seen any evidence that woman are target more than men

(BA gold card holder who flies BA quite a bit!)

DorisParchment · 05/06/2023 19:43

@SwedishDeathClearance when I have flown they have approached people who are waiting at the gate, before it is clear which boarding group they are in. They have approached me several times, and as I am usually travelling Club (and also a gold card holder), I have declined. But they were very definitely targeting the women first.

You just say I am GCH /in club and they move on
I have never seen them target women over men at either LHR or outstations. Maybe we fly different routes.

Same. I've been Gold/Silver for the past decade and have never been targeted, or seen other women being targeted. I fly mainly to the US, I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I travel the world a lot.
I always have a distinctive case - never black. I then put personalised luggage straps around the case. One of my cases has a personalised cover that I secure over it ( contains mobility equipment so cover has a picture and mentions fragile please )
I put a label on the inside with my details and luggage tag on the outside:
All cases have Air Tags in them - even my cabin case ( just in case )

I always arrive at the airport early so plenty of time for case to reach the plane.

OP - hope you get your luggage 🧳 soon 🤞🏼

Yes, when I was talking about 'the queue' it was in context of everyone with relevant loyalty status and ticket class already being excluded from the bag checking at the gate scenario.

I travel mostly to Middle East and Asia (I'm Gold with Etihad, Qatar (Oneworld, so also BA) and Turkish if it's relevant) but also do Canada, USA and plenty around Europe each year.
