To think people in pubs are becoming louder?

Or has it always been this way?

I live close to seven or eight pubs, and go for drinks often. It is becoming unbearable because of the volume of the other people there.

Every time I go out there always seems to be at least one group of people properly shouting their conversation rather than just talking, to the point where it’s impossible to have a conversation because I can’t hear my friends and vice versa.

It really seems to be much worse lately than it ever has before. Is it just me or is anyone else noticing it?

It’s always groups of people rather than two people, and it’s like they’re shouting over each other to be heard to the point it’s all the room can hear. I’ve noticed it largely tends to be groups of men, but then last week it was a mixed group and one woman within it was absolutely shrieking over everyone so that no one else could hear their own conversation.

I've noticed this recently in pubs and restaurants. I can't figure out if it's worse than it used it be or if avoiding crowded places for a long time during covid means that I don't have the same tolerance for that type of noise that I used to!!

People are loud, gobby and very opinionated now. They're all probably coked up as well so have lost their inhibitions. It's a pity that the hard of thinking are those who have the most children. Their children are equally loud and spend their time duffing other children up whilst screaming into their faces.

I wonder this too. I can’t work out if I’ve got less tolerance after the break in going to pubs during Covid, or if people have forgotten how to act in in public places because of covid.

I swear the bar staff used to say something if people were being so loud they were drowning out everyone else.

No, you’re just getting older, OP. Perfectly normal. Happens to us all. Just wait until you’re getting annoyed by the birds in your garden ruining your peace & quiet with their noisy singing.

ItsCalledAConversation · 29/05/2023 17:45

Cocaine is currently way cheaper than it ever used to be.

Fandabedodgy · 29/05/2023 17:46

It's 3 years old businesses being quieter due to Covid and now returning to normal and you are getting older.

Mattersnot14 · 29/05/2023 17:52

I worried it might be me getting older!

Honestly though, the majority of people talk normally, but then there is always one group of people absolutely screaming at the top of their voices at each other. It’s like they’re all competing to be the centre of attention and inflicting the noise on everyone else.

I’ve also wondered if it’s something to do with insulation or something in the pubs meaning the sound isn’t absorbed like it used to be. Or maybe because the pubs have morphed into an open plan set up rather than the booths. No idea if that’s at all born out by science though.

Apparently there's a thing as you get older (peri menopause related) that means that you get hypersensitive to noise! I'm right there now!

gogohmm · 29/05/2023 17:57

Could be hearing related, I find that the general hubbub is more annoying now I'm older and I'm convinced is hearing not being as good

ILikePizzas · 29/05/2023 17:59

Or maybe it is that you are getting older (and grouchier) ! ;)
Happens to us all. Welcome to the club!

Mattersnot14 · 29/05/2023 18:09

Haha, sounds like it’s just me then.

But honestly, some people are so loud it’s impossible to have a conversation yourself. Like not just unenjoyable, it’s actually impossible to hear the person you’re with.

You have something there. As revolting as pub carpets were, they did absorb noise (also flock wallpaper). It's all hard shiny surfaces now and the sound just bounces off it. I hate it

Haywirecity · 29/05/2023 18:12

I blame the smoking ban. Before that most people had dry and hoarse throats from all that smoke so they spoke quieter. Fact.

Hmm, this is interesting. Next time I’m out I’m going to check the flooring and see if the carpets are gone. I think they might be.

Get your hearing checked.

Not being able to hear people near you due to noisy backgrounds is a sign of hearing loss and getting older

blahblahblah1654 · 29/05/2023 19:08

Probably just getting older. I've been getting more intolerant and I'm only 38 Grin

Or maybe it's just people getting more unmannerly and less mindful of people around them.
Yes, there is more screeching and fucking and blinding at top volume and there is no excuse for it.

If you can't behave, stay at home.

Depends on the pub I find.
