Drumming

AIBU… neighbour drumming in their house which is audible from our house and garden up and across the street?! Driving me mad. Surely some effort should be made to soundproof or use electric drums?!

So I’m guessing you have not bothered to stroll over there and ask them politely to turn it down?

I am also guessing this isn’t a regular occurrence and toddy first day it’s happened

If you’d read the thread I have confirmed how often. And the reason for my post is to ask people if IABU. General consensus is 65% think I’m not so I will be asking them to let me know times or limit it to an hour as I think that is more than reasonable!

We have a neighbour who plays the drums.
As a hobby, he’s not a professional standard.

He plays in his garage with the doors shut, I don’t know if he realises how much the sound travels.
But he never plays at antisocial hours - always during normal daytime working hours - and never for hours at a time or anything excessive like that. So it doesn’t feel outside the boundaries of what I’d consider normal / expected neighbour noise and I’ve never complained about it.

But I wasn’t suggesting you ask them to stop

you could pop around and ask them to turn it down if attached to speakers (must be if you hear it down the street) or use headphones

Yabu. It's only an hour now and again during the day. I think it's silly to be asking when they plan on playing when it's just during daytime hours.

If they have only done it for an hour in the middle of the day I'm not sure there's any compromise to reach.

But the OP says this time it was an hour. Happens every few days so perhaps there is a compromise? I’m not really sure why the fact the most latest time was for just one hour really comes into it.

Lonelycrab · 29/05/2023 17:08

I’m not sure how a drum kit could be sound proofed

With great difficulty. It’s a lot more involved than hanging a few bits of foam on the walls. Deadening pads on top of the skins will help quite a bit but change the feel and sound when playing.

The more expensive electronic kits have tuneable heads and feel very similar to a real kit.

I think an hour a day or so is reasonable, perhaps unless it’s a terrace with really thin walls.

They are definitely not professional!
this time it was an hour. Happens every few days, seemingly no pattern to what time.

My son does an hour a day. He practises for his GCSEs in music. Perhaps this person is doing the same, are you really saying they shouldn't practise for exams?

GoodChat · 29/05/2023 17:12

@TheSnowyOwl because you cant knock on their door and ask them to keep it to an hour when they already have

YABU unless they're doing it in the early morning or late at night. Lots of things that people do in their own homes make noise that others can hear: DIY, mowing the lawn, tinkering with the car, dogs barking, babies crying etc. It's something you just have to put up with when you live in the vicinity of other homes.

The things you've listed are mostly standard living noises. Drumming in a built up area, inflicting your hobby on others, for more than an hour, would piss me off!
Assume it's been going on for a while op?

But why are you making out my comment was to do with a specific length of time?

GoodChat · 29/05/2023 18:17

@TheSnowyOwl because you said they could compromise

You can tell, who doesn't have a drummer living nearby!

Exactly....I can still remember the pain it caused when the renters next door fancied themselves as the next Kasabian. Absolutely zero consideration in the evening.

They were crap too.

Gettingbysomehow · 29/05/2023 18:34

You should try living in Glastonbury! Well maybe not if you really hate the sound of drumming/chanting/gong baths/digeridoos and the smell of weed.

Wolbarker · 29/05/2023 18:36

Buy a house away from other people then.
