To be surprised a lot of gay men are going against Phil

Dr Ranj, Rylan, that guy on GB news.
It should put to bed a lot of the talk that the critics are homophobic.

OP posts:

Agree with the responses here . None of this is because PS is gay. He, in his 50s, had a relationship with a teenage boy and then lied about it . That is the problem

Of course gay men are condemning him. They know that if they don’t they will - completely unfairly - be tarred with the same brush.

Just wait until the next time a gay man lands a high profile media gig. “Look what happened with Phillip Schofield, they’re all paedos” will be the first cry of the protesting homophobes. It’s completely unfair - no one says Australians can’t get top TV jobs in case they’re like Rolf Harris - but it will happen. It’s not restricted to gay men either. Do you think Noel Clarke’s behaviour has made life any easier for young up and coming black actors?

And yet on another thread there were posters saying that gay people are a "sacred caste" who can't be criticised.

KateyCuckoo · 28/05/2023 19:27

And the fact that he's using gay as his excuse. If this was a woman/young girl he'd been cheating with, Holly wouldn't have called him 'brave'.

I think that at the time Holly would have actually...

myheadisspinningoutofcontrol · 28/05/2023 20:24

They probably want to distance themselves from him as they feel he is giving them a bad name!

EarringsandLipstick · 28/05/2023 20:36

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt · 28/05/2023 19:27

Why are you surprised that gay men are against men who groom children?

Exactly.

What an odd thread OP

EarringsandLipstick · 28/05/2023 20:37

People are saying "So what", "You wouldn't say this about a man grooming a girl, is it because he's gay?"

What people are saying this?

TeaYarn · 28/05/2023 20:38

EarringsandLipstick · 28/05/2023 20:36

Exactly.

What an odd thread OP

Just another example of homophobia on MN.

Bargellobitch · 28/05/2023 20:40

Why would you be surprised. They are gay men not pedophiles.

SkatieKatie · 28/05/2023 20:44

It's nothing to do with him being gay

It's because he groomed a teenager

I don't see how that's difficult to understand

queenofthewild · 28/05/2023 20:50

Gay men Phil's age had a terrible time in the 80's and 90's with homophobia, the aids crisis, being accused of paedophilia. They stood their ground and fought for equal rights. Meanwhile Phil was pretending to be straight and decided to come out when he was wealthy and comfortable enough to do so. And was then hailed as "brave". A lot of gay men had been far braver for decades than he was whimpering on that sofa.

And now it transpires that he may have been grooming much younger men and boys. Something again that many gay men have spent decades protesting they do not do.

Too bloody right many members of the gay community are disgusted by him.

FiddleLeaf · 28/05/2023 20:53

I imagine a lot of people who originally said it was homophobia haven’t seen the child’s photo & imagine him as a grown man.

Thinkwhat · 28/05/2023 20:58

The man used coming out as gay to mask/deflect attention from an inappropriate relationship with a junior colleague. I am not surprised that many who lauded him as a role model are now back peddling and rightly appalled at his behaviour

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 28/05/2023 21:12

Your thread is so offensive, OP. You think that gay men would find some sort of kinship with another gay man who is being investigated for grooming?

I can only think that you're being a goady fucker. It's preferable to being very stupid I suppose.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 28/05/2023 21:32

Being gay doesn't mean you support nonces. Good god woman, what are you on to post this shite.

HRTQueen · 28/05/2023 21:34

He has groomed very young men possibly children

any decent adult is appalled by such behaviour

Exactly. If he was brave he'd have come out in the 80s, not in 2021 when nobody bats an eyelid if someone is gay!

Lidlpopdrinker · 28/05/2023 21:50

Why are you surprised that gay men would condemn a nonce? Do you think gay men are generally supportive of nonces?

The only thing that’s homophobic is your OP.

TheInterceptor · 28/05/2023 21:54

I don't think Dr. Ranj should really be casting any stones.

To be fair it is suggestes on here fairly often, it’s on my mn bingo card.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/05/2023 22:25

YABU for loads of reasons OP.HmmConfused

Anyway, PS wasn't really "gay" when this relationship happened. He was a straight-up, heterosexual, nice guy with a wife, children, good career and nice house.HmmHmmHmm

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/05/2023 22:26

And powerful friends.

SwordToFlamethrower · 28/05/2023 22:37

He protected a nonce. Nowt to with him being gay.
Same as I don't protect rapists because I'm straight

Bromptotoo · 28/05/2023 23:18

If he were simply a man who came out as gay in later life after hiding behind a conventional marriage and kids lifestyle then as a straight liberal I'd be happy to go in to bat for him.

The specific issue here is about the extent to which he helped the much much younger man to his job on TV and the power imbalance. Anything else around other toxic behaviour and/or using the law and/or press complaints process just aggravates his 'offending'.

Grumpusaurus · 29/05/2023 00:59

Gay men had to fight for yonks to stop their sexual preference being conflated with an interest in boys. What an utterly stupid post you have written OP.
