Can you stop parking on the beaches. This happens every year and it’s getting ridiculous!

Until Doc Martin made Port Isaac a crazy tourist mecca, the beach was used as a carpark every day. You'd pay for the privilege and note what time to move by - the car park man would tell those nearer the sea that they had to move by X time and most did... but quite a few didn't and it was always good sport watching the floaters from the platt... too much traffic down the teeny tiny roads has now put a stop to it but it was good while it lasted 😂

OnTimeStillLate · 28/05/2023 16:31

This has been happening for years it seems. My DF did this on a Cornwall Beach in the 80's. We used to have beach parties with a group of families and my DF would drive his car onto the sand to use the radio for music. It was great until the battery died and the tide started rolling in. We walked home along the Cliff while my Dad waited for the tow. That was a BMW too!

crackofdoom · 28/05/2023 16:32

No no, PLEASE don't stop parking on the beach, especially if you have a brand new BMW or Range Rover! It's an immense source of amusement for us in the summer months 😆

HewasH20 · 28/05/2023 16:33

Ha! Regular occurrence here on the Isle of Wight too

Cornish, married to an Islander. They have a habit of ignoring sea walls on the Island & just driving straight over them

squashyhat · 28/05/2023 16:33

I managed to do this by the Thames at Putney many years ago. I never got the smell out of my poor old Vauxhall Nova. I did wonder why the river was flowing the wrong way.... Blush

IglesiasPiggl · 28/05/2023 16:36

Oh my, that's peak stupidity. I live near a low railway bridge. It's heavily signed as such and even has one of those dangly metal things that jangles if your vehicle isn't going to fit under the impending bridge. Every other week some numpty gets stuck under it....

Dahliasrule · 28/05/2023 16:36

This reminds me of the time when my lovely, but wild sister and her husband decided we would all go for a midnight swim and parked the car on the beach. Of course, it didn’t want to move back up the beach when it was time to go. We got it out using surfboards, the old fashioned wooden type, ( I am quite old!) I was terrified by the whole experience.

Ylvamoon · 28/05/2023 16:37

.... well its a guaranteed way to get a rust bucket with all the trimmings!

bornintheuk2 · 28/05/2023 16:38

Bosham in West Sussex. There is one road and folk do like to park as close to the water as possible. The are big signs warning of tidal flooding but still they do it. Great sport in deed, especially as you know the car will never be the same again

TeenLifeMum · 28/05/2023 16:40

Weston and the beach just asking have parking on the beach very clearly marked where the sea doesn’t reach. People always seem to think they know better than the signs and park outside that area. Usually a bmw x5 or similar. There’s certain cars that come with a certain level of arrogance (although mn tells us we shouldn’t judge…. We all do!).

FourChimneys · 28/05/2023 16:28

I saw that happen years ago at Weston-super-Mare. A posh car, an embarrassed woman, lots of people trying to help dig the car out and a man having a huge tantrum, threatening to sue the council because there were no signs saying the sea would come in.

You can actually park on the beach in Weston, though. Close to the Golf Club.

SalviaDivinorum · 28/05/2023 17:32

Happens regularly here too. We all find it quite funny and have zero sympathy

Shattered04 · 28/05/2023 18:15

I grew up in Cornwall, and got massively confused on my first trip to the Mediterranean. Honestly could not understand why it was okay to leave all that stuff out on the beach 24/7 and was genuinely surprised to find out there was such a thing as a proper beach with barely any tides! Weirdly liberating being able to walk miles along a beach and not needing to work out where the nearest exits are at all times 😊

cocksstrideintheevening · 28/05/2023 18:15

Seen it happen at camber sands many times.

No signs saying the sea would come in ffs Grin

Was it his first time outside of a cellar in his life?!

Iwantacampervan · 28/05/2023 18:30

This happens in a village near us as you can park in the harbour area at low tide. Despite large signs around there are often people who are caught out.

TeaYarn · 28/05/2023 18:39

If it happens so often why not put up a sign. Not everyone is privileged enough to know how the tide works 😂

Are people really so ignorant? These are things that you learn as a child.

Wisterical · 28/05/2023 18:59

Don't stop! We love it round here, towing the fools off the beach is a regular and welcome extra income for the locals.

Except, as I’ve posted previously, what I ‘learnt as a child’ is that beaches are fine for parking on and that’s just what you do. I’m not sure it would automatically occur to me that there are unmarked beaches where it isn’t safe to park when my lived experience is the exact opposite.

This blows my mind

ClusterFuckIt · 28/05/2023 19:37

Literally millions of children grow up in this country having never seen the sea, It’s quite easy to believe they wouldn’t understand how the tides work.

HewasH20 · 28/05/2023 20:16

But they're unlikely to be driving the 4WDs and BMWs which get stuck on beaches. You rarely see a beaten up old Fiesta stranded on a beach.
