1 year old nose bleed

My one year old has a bit of blood around his nose when he woke up today.

It's now starting to come out again. Just a little bit. Not really a proper stream of blood or anything like that.

No idea what's caused it. He's had nose bleeds before when he's bumped his nose, but not without bumping it. Perhaps he bumped it during the night, who knows.

I don't think much of it, but NHS site says you have to see a GP if a child under 2 has a nose bleed. Seems a bit much. Or am I being too chilled about it ?

Obviously I'm a little bit worried, but I'm not thinking that I need to go to an out of hours GP. I might request a call on Tuesday. Baby is otherwise well.

Both my kids have been sneezing a little bit and occasionally had a tiny bit of a runny nose the last few days, which has made me think they might be getting a cold. A proper cold hasn't reared its ugly head yet, so perhaps they both have a bit of hay fever / allergies.

Medical advice is there for a reason - to follow it.

If the NHS website says to seek medical attention then I'm struggling to see why you wouldn't.

Call 111. They'll probably want to wait and see (could he have banged his nose on his cot?) but at least it's then up to a medical system to triage and not you assuming he'll be ok. Fingers crossed it's nothing.

I’m not sure I’d class what you are describing as a nose bleed? Has he maybe been picking at his nose?

It's just a drop and then slowly another drop. Not a proper nose bleed. I know Bad nosebleeds as I suffered like crazy as a child and had to have a few procedures done do stop it.

I've never seen him pick his nose so far, bless him. I don't think he's worked out that it's something he can do.

Common sense is also important, I think..

If he banged it or picked it I wouldn't expect a slow drip. I probably would get it checked out.

DD has always had them when the weather is hot. My brother always had them too from young. Personally I’d just keep an eye on them and ring 111 if you have any further concerns.

Ostryga · 28/05/2023 08:21

I’d give it a little bit longer and if it doesn’t stop call 111 or pop to a walk in. If it does give the gp a call on Tuesday for an appointment just to check.

How many drips are we talking here?

Weirdly, I had a similar kind of nose bleed this morning, I’ve had nasal congestion all week (not a real cold, just more snotty than usual)

bablies · 28/05/2023 08:25

@Newname211 just one or max two. I've wiped his nose and it hasn't come back so far. I wiped it this morning too and then it came back. It's ever so slight.

The advice is there because it’s unusual for children under 2 and was told it can be a marker for abuse.

My daughter got nose bleeds at a similar age and still does as did her dad, so I think for some people it’s just hereditary and they’re prone to it.

Don’t think they’ll actually do anything about it other than the usual advice. If it’s a reoccurring thing they might suggest naseptin and then if it’s really problematic and repeats itself a lot then cauterisation, which I’m assuming is what you had.

It really sounds like an irritated nose rather than anything serious IMO. If you are worried; maybe contact a pharmacist rather than out of hours or anything.

Yep, Naseptin here too… now he’s 4 it’s a little better, but around 2-3 he had some really awful night bleeds. Usually when he has a cold or the air is dry.
