What day off? 4 day week pattern

Yummyyummyinmytummy · 26/05/2023 21:52

I am starting to work soon part time, 4 days a week. I used to work full time forever but having two young kids and full time is not going well for us. So, it’s time for part time!

I can choose any day of the week I want to take off but I need to pick one and stick with it.

For those of you that have worked part time what would you suggest?

It can’t be a Monday as we have a key meeting on Mondays plus I will miss all bank holidays.

I am thinking either Wednesdays to break the week in two small halves or Fridays that is generally a quiet day at work and it will give me a good early start for the weekend.

YABU - Wednesday is better
YANBU - Friday is better

I have Thursdays off, have done for the past couple of decades now and don't intend to change. Initially it was because of needing to fit in with DH's work (he took Fridays off) but actually, there's something quite nice about doing three days in a row, having a day off and then returning to tie up loose ends before the weekend.

Things like World Book Day tend to fall on a Thursday too so it can be handy to know you're around for them (if you want to be!).

Nursery used to be busier and harder to get a place weds when dd was small. As pt people often do 3 days so M-W or W-F.
Weds definitely felt more of a break than Fri. Miss my Weds off!

Most people tend to want a Monday or Friday off so they can have a long weekend.

However, I have a Wednesday so you never work more than two days at time. It's great.

However, my employer agreed I could have the option of changing my day off to a Friday occasionally if i wanted a long weekend. I've not done that yet!

Dixiechickonhols · 27/05/2023 06:23

It also depends on work. If you are a conveyancer and all your completions are Fri then it’s a no go. My work meant Tues was deadline so weds off worked well. Plus you are back Thurs most things could wait one day.

I work full time in 4 days and have Wednesday off and love it. Means I get all my bank holidays and also places are not so busy on a Wednesday so if I go out to town or something it's also quiet/appointments for dentist or haircut are always available.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 27/05/2023 06:28

I'd much!rather work four days in a row and have a long weekend every week than have an annoying mid-week day off that you can't really do anything fun with.

I'm really surprised Wednesdays seem so popular Grin.

Plus if you don't work a Friday you could go away on Thursday night on a BH weekend and not need to be back in work until Tuesday morning!

I'd go Monday. Mondays are evil

SavvyWavvy · 27/05/2023 06:33

It shouldn’t matter that you’re missing bank holidays by not working on Mondays. Your share of the bank holidays should be added to your annual leave allowance - that’s how it works with my employer and most others.

If the Monday meeting can be moved I would really recommend taking Monday off instead of Friday. I find Friday a better day to work because it’s generally much quieter - lots of other people are on leave, people don’t tend to arrange meetings for Fridays and lots of people finish early on Fridays. I work Tuesday-Friday and Friday is always the most relaxed working day. It’s also really nice on a Sunday knowing your weekend isn’t over yet.

Mumof1andacat · 27/05/2023 06:40

I take Wednesdays as it breaks up the week for me and ds. It was a day off nursery for him, and also now no wraparound care needed or holidays clubs in the school holidays. Also, for me, thing's like the hair dressers are open.

Ladysaurus · 27/05/2023 06:48

Monday or Friday.

Don't take midweek. It doubles the number of evenings you have to think 'eurgh, I have to go to work tomorrow'.

If it won't affect your annual leave, take the Friday. If it will, take the Monday.

LlynTegid · 27/05/2023 07:14

Key meeting?? Could it not be on a Tuesday? How really important is it?

If not Monday, then I would suggest Friday. I work a four day week myself and have Monday off, which when I am visiting anywhere makes the journey back a lot easier.

Bonjovispjs · 27/05/2023 07:19

I also have Wednesdays off and as others have said, it is absolutely the best day to take off as it breaks up the week. I've had Fridays off in other jobs and it just doesn't compare, felt like the days just rolled into one, so didn't really feel like I'd had an extra day off.

Daleksatemyshed · 27/05/2023 07:19

I don't work Wednesdays which is lovely, much easier to get appointments mid week and you never work more than two days in a row.

Justalittlebitduckling · 27/05/2023 07:27

Fridays, 100%.

I do a 4 day week and Tuesday is my day off. I like it because it breaks the week up but also means when there's a bank holiday I get a really long weekend!

Same

RedRobin100 · 27/05/2023 07:31

Plus to add, Fridays are generally a bit quieter so I use it to either take it a bit easier, or catch up on paperwork.
I figured, looking after two kids all day is not easy, so it’s not going to be a “nice relaxy day off” for Me, so do Tuesdays and it’s great because when I come back in on Wednesday the rest of the week goes so quick

LuubyLuu · 27/05/2023 07:38

I've done different combinations, and the best for me was taking Wednesday off for reasons others have given, breaking up week, food planning, and not a big stretch til some quality time with the kinder.

My problem when I took Friday off was that t
Plots of deliverables were to the Friday, was hard motivating the team to a Thursday timeframe. Also missing out on a more relaxed day, team lunches, earlier finish, casual dressing etc.

PylaSheight · 27/05/2023 09:35

It depends whether you think you'd prefer a long weekend every week, or if you think working 4 days straight is too tiring. I work 4 days per week and have tried Wednesdays off and Fridays off. Personally I prefer not working Wednesdays as my job can be rather full-on and splitting the week with a rest day helps me recharge.
