To wish someone would lock me in a room to detox from sugar?

Seriously think it's the only way I'm ever going to be free of it. I'd actually like to be locked up like a drug addict for an enforced detox because no matter how hard I try to quit or moderate I fail.

If I could afford it I'd go on a health retreat.

I know a lot of people won't understand and just have the attitude ' well don't eat it then '....if only it was that simple.

Giving up booze is a doddle in comparison

Me too.

If you can get through 48 hours of a low carb diet, honestly the cravings vanish. I was a sugar addict all my life.

twixwrapper · 25/05/2023 22:03

Also me 😞

Divorcedalongtime · 25/05/2023 22:04

I cut out sugar about 10 years ago and the only way I can stay off it is if I have none. Ever.
when I turned 50 in April I allowed myself cake and sweets and everything for a week while on holiday and it too. 2-3 weeks to get back to zero cravings.

You can do it. Stay strong

Trust me, I've tried. Many, many times 😞

It's nice to know I'm not alone!

I only ever get sugar cravings when I'm on a diet, which i currently am, it's annoying and really hard to stop the cravings

HappiDaze · 25/05/2023 22:10

It's like a drug I can't control

Try kefir (ideally homemade, usually in the Polish or yogurt section of the supermarket otherwise). Totally removed all my cravings for sweet things within a couple of days.

Is a fermented milk drink- like yakult or actimel but with 20+ types of good bacteria not just one. Improving your good gut bacteria removes the bad bacteria wanting sugar. Easy to make at home if you can get some “grains” which look like rubbery cauliflower. Put them in a cup of milk overnight, sieve it once it’s thickened like yogurt, drink the milk (now kefir) and put the grains in some more milk (in the fridge if you want to slow down the process).

Try Medjool dates as a substitute. They’re like eating toffee. Great with zero fat natural yogurt, nutritious and filling.

Hedonism · 25/05/2023 22:57

I love sugar 😭😭😭😭

Beeinalily · 25/05/2023 22:58

Or you could just eat it and enjoy it. Is it that terrible?

Theoldcuriosityshop · 25/05/2023 23:00

I love sugar as well. I'm old though, I'm just enjoying it, too late to worry about it.

ShopoholicIn · 25/05/2023 23:02

Same here

But surely these are super sugary?!

I've had a terrible week for eating vast amounts of crap. The more I eat the more I want, and the freedom when I've managed to lay off it properly is wonderful.

The difficulty in giving up sugar, is that it's in so many products. So you either have to make your own bread or go without. Realistically who has time to make a loaf of bread every or every other day?
Most cereals are also out, fruit is out, dates would certainly be out. Most processed foods are out, many ready meals will be out. A number of salad dressings would be out, many sauces would be out. Anything but plain yoghurt would be out....the list is endless. It's one of the reasons 'getting' off sugar is so much harder than say giving up alcohol or cigarettes (although I know from having a family member that giving up alcohol isn't easy at all).

Really not that difficult at all. Bread is pure empty calories anyway so can cut that out along with cereals.
there is so much yoj can eat which has very low sugar.
I set myself a limit of 2g per 100g but would strive for under 0.5%.
I followed this for 10 or so years with no problems.
my mood is terrible with the sugar highs and lows for anyone saying just enjoy it. Also weight just piles on so having none is the only way it works for me

LuckyPeonies · 25/05/2023 23:25

Same here! I can literally eat only one or two crisps and leave the rest (husband would never let them go stale 😁), but when it comes to chocolate and other sweets I am beyond greedy and won’t stop til it’s all gone. The only solution for me is to leave them at the store. But I always crave them.
