Would you accept such job offer?

Is salary increase from £47K to £70k worth it to make a job move (I don't have great emotional attachment to my current position, to say the least). I'm married to a British person, but not overly familiar with the local job market. Would appreciate any intel.

Why wouldn’t you move for that offer?

edwinbear · 25/05/2023 15:48

Is this one of those stealth boast posts?

Hotcuppatea · 25/05/2023 15:50

It entirely depends on what your job is. We can't tell you if that's a good salary unless you tell us what you do.

Niceseasidetown · 25/05/2023 15:51

Its a huge increase. I'd consider if you are up to it....may find yourself under more pressure, longer hours etc

I recently went from £52k to £83k but I was happier with less stress in my old job

Sanct · 25/05/2023 15:51
Hmm
Partytastic · 25/05/2023 15:52

Do you mean a geographical move too or just a job move?

BarbaraofSeville · 25/05/2023 15:58

At first glance it looks like a no brainer, but you need to take into account that you'll pay 40% tax on most of the extra money, plus extra student loan repayments if relevant and you'll also lose all your child benefit if you're entitled to it.

So while it is a decent pay rise, it's not quite as much as it might first appear. You should also take into account any extra travel or other costs, or any differences in working culture such as more travel, loss of flexibility, worse pension, longer hours etc.

Does the new job look like it will be positive to your life/career as well as the extra money?

Colleague has just made a similar move, but working so much longer hours that the hourly rate is about the same. Also has a lot more travel, including overseas and job is a lot less family friendly so knock on impact at home.

teomama · 25/05/2023 16:00

I guess my question was more in the lines of - what % increase makes it worth to switch companies (and I understand it's hugely individual).

Thread makes no sense.

No-one can say.

Depends on the differences in the job.

Depends on how much you need the extra money. Are you struggling to pay for essentials so you need to earn more, or is it just a 'nice to have' where you'll just increase your lifestyle or just save the extra money.

Some people will move for an extra 10%, others won't for twice as much.

Oblomov23 · 25/05/2023 16:05

Eh? Is this a joke?

Didtheythough · 25/05/2023 16:07

That's nearly a 50% increase, are you ever likely to get an increase of more than 50% ? I think that would be pretty unlikely, so yes, if your aim is to get a better paid job then a 50% pay increase is worth moving for.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 25/05/2023 16:08

Depends on all sorts of things - on the face of it, the extra money looks great, but you need to think of things like:

Going up a tax bracket - will you take home as much as you think?
Will it impact your work-life balance?
Does it mean a longer commute or additional costs like train fares?
Will it mean longer hours and paying out more in (eg) childcare?

Trisolaris · 25/05/2023 16:14
  1. Use a salary after tax calculator and input any relevant details for both roles, compare numbers.
  2. Deduct commuting cost for both jobs
  3. Consider any additional travelling time as work time and compare hourly pay

That should let you compare but most likely the answer will be yes.

Trisolaris · 25/05/2023 16:15

Oh also compare cost of financial benefits e.g pension, bonus, car allowance

GeraltsBathtub · 25/05/2023 16:27

Depends on the job and what your priorities and financial situation are. I turned down a move from £55k to £75k in favour of a sideways move for basically no extra pay earlier this year. The higher paying job had less annual leave, longer hours and was less interesting work - those sacrifices were not worth the extra money to me.

ActDottie · 25/05/2023 16:30

You’re coming across as boastful!!! That would be a massive pay rise to anyone

Goodoccasionallypoor · 25/05/2023 16:30

I'd say for the vast majority of people, a 50% increase is worth changing jobs for.

StayingZenInTheVipersDen · 25/05/2023 16:31

Too many variables to advise really. You would be moving from where to where and what sort of career etc etc.

I understand if you wouldn't want to out yourself but maybe some vague details might help

MasterBeth · 25/05/2023 16:34

It's a huge % increase. I am pretty fond of my job but I'd jump ship for another 45-50%!

AffIt · 25/05/2023 16:34

Personally, I wouldn't move for less than at least 10-15%, and I am a high earner (yes, yes, I am one of the apparently non-existent MN six-figures types), so on paper, the figures look good for you, OP, but as PPs have said, what are the other considerations?

Location, work / life balance, opportunities and prospects, stress / pressure?

This is a timely post, because I got a disappointing offer today from a firm I've been speaking to for a few weeks (they pursued me, btw, and knew what my existing compensation was).

I'm not desperate to move and not stupid enough to give up established tenure and all the associated insecurity for less, so when they came back to me with a package that's only worth about £2k more than I'm on just now, I told them to chase themselves (and explained why).

thecatsthecats · 25/05/2023 16:35

It's sort of irksome that someone could be considered worth that salary without the ability to draw up a basic pros and cons list and research the local context themselves.

Lemonfanta4 · 25/05/2023 16:52

how do the jobs compare?
workload/ work life balance etc

Quite!

You haven’t listed any potential cons or anything relating to personal circumstances that may influence peoples opinions so how can anyone possibly advise?
