To have expected my mum to wash the bottle?

This is a bit of a silly one really but it annoyed me a bit and I wanted to know if I am being unreasonable!

I visited my mum with my 3 month old baby at the weekend. We see her several times a week. When we were there, my baby had a bottle but left about 30ml of milk. Normally I’d tip this out and wash the bottle straight away but the baby did a poo so I had to change her and got distracted.

I left after a few hours and without thinking I accidentally left the bottle on the side. My mum texted me that afternoon to let me know I’d left it and that she would bring it when she visited this week.

Today she has returned the bottle with the left over milk still left in it! AIBU to have expected my mum to at least rinsed the bottle out before bringing it back? It absolutely stinks!

Probably but not worth getting your knickers in a twist!!

PuffinStar · 25/05/2023 13:47

As I said, it’s just a silly one! No knickers twisted here.

Eww, who does that 😂 is she generally clean op?

SleepingStandingUp · 25/05/2023 13:47

Of course not, I'd have probably made a light comment about her not emptying it and it stinking out her house.

If you'd left for on her plate would she have returned it mouldy too you?

mainsfed · 25/05/2023 13:48

Maybe she thought you were going to re-wash it and sterilise it anyway, so no point in her washing it?

Wherewithout · 25/05/2023 13:49

Yes I think in that situation most people would have washed it up for you, I bet that was disgusting!

Xrays · 25/05/2023 13:50

That’s very odd. I mean it’s hardly the crime of the century but yes most people would have washed it!

off · 25/05/2023 13:50

I suppose if I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt she might have been concerned she'd wash it "wrong" — I don't know much about baby bottles, but am vaguely aware that you're meant to sterilise them and use boiled water for feeds, and that there's some concern about scratches harbouring bacteria. Maybe someone super-cautious would think they'd better leave well alone rather than risk contaminating them with tap water. (I'd have rinsed it though.)

KT1112 · 12/10/2023 12:02

Mumsnet always astounds me with the ability to give the benefit of the doubt in literally any situation 😂

No you're definitely not being unreasonable. At the very least anyone would have tipped out the old milk, surely at least 99% would also have rinsed the milk residue out. Not least becuase it would make their own house smell in the meantime.

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/10/2023 12:28

If you visit often, do you leave her with little extra chores to do regularly? Is she making a point that you expect her to pick up after you?

If not, yes, it’s weird of her.

Caspianberg · 12/10/2023 12:31

Yes that’s weird. I would expect her to have emptied and given it a basic rinse at least ( probably a proper wash tbh). Then just return it and say it’s been basic washed but you probably want to do it again to double check and sterilise if you usually do.

Ifailed · 12/10/2023 12:43

I would expect someone to rinse out, but not expect it to be sterile.

Pyjamaramma · 12/10/2023 13:08

Have you ever "corrected" her bottle washing methods in the past? I got sick of someone advising me on bottle washing and looking over my shoulder while I was doing it, I stopped washing them after a day or two but did give them a rinse and point out they would still need washing.

lillylovely1993 · 12/10/2023 13:10

Yes I would have rinsed out .

Bibijuju · 12/10/2023 13:36

YANBU - She could’ve at least rinsed it out

frenchfries111 · 12/10/2023 16:13

Not emptying it and rinsing it out is a bit grim. It’s milk!

ginasevern · 12/10/2023 18:40

@PuffinStar

I'm assuming that your DM wouldn't normally do something like this. Have you noticed any other "lapses" lately?

QueenofTheSlipstreamVM · 12/10/2023 18:47

Maybe she thought she might do it wrong or something? Myself , daughters and family never used bottles... l do know you're suppose to sterilise them.. some people have things you put in microwave? I know formula smells bad .. but bottles are cheap enough to throw away and buy another one and you need more than one anyhow?
Dunno what l would have done to be honest.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/10/2023 20:45

Very skanky

Nothing worse then mouldy milk in smell or texture

Why on Earth didn't she rinse out and wash or even just tip milk away and fill with water

SmileyClare · 12/10/2023 20:54

It’s strange. Is she forgetful or making errors in other ways? Or does she have terrible eyesight?

Leaving milk out in a bottle that long is a breeding ground for bacteria. It wouldn’t give me much confidence if you were leaving baby in her care.

I think I would say something, just in a lighthearted/ teasing her about it way.

Id be a bit concerned!

MysweetAudrina · 12/10/2023 20:57

Maybe she just remembered it on the way out the door and just grabbed it.

m00rfarm · 12/10/2023 20:59

Yuk. Has she always been like this? Definitely not BU

newYear10 · 12/10/2023 20:59

That's disgusting. Even if she forgot she could have quickly washed it before bringing it. I would throw it away.
