Hello. After lurking in the shadows for what feels like an eternity, I’ve finally mustered the courage to make my first post on this forum. As a long, long-time lurker, it’s exciting to be part of the conversation and seek some advice and inspiration from this community and, in particular, from fellow Eastern Europeans living in England. To give you a bit of background, I’ve been in this country for a solid 15 years now, working hard to build a successful life. Education-wise I had to start from scratch but managed to achieve a first-class bachelor’s degree, a vocational qualification, and even a master’s. I’ve gained valuable experience in different areas of my industry, having worked in various parts of the country, both North and South. I currently live in the North West. However, despite my qualifications and experience, I’ve faced some significant challenges in my career. Employment conditions for me have usually been precarious, with rolling contracts that keep me perpetually on a probationary period or employment that offers no options for an upward trajectory and a salary above £20,000. I have recently ventured into the civil service, enduring nearly a year of anticipation and three placements on the reserve list, only to be offered a position that requires no educational qualification and provides no career development. It’s been disheartening to say the least and frustrating to feel like my education goes underutilised (and I spent a lot of time and money to achieve it!).While my journey as a British citizen, which I achieved almost a decade ago, has been smooth sailing in terms of immigration matters, I do notice that my accent tends to set me apart when I speak. It’s not overwhelmingly strong, but it seems to make a difference in how I’m perceived. I don’t consider it a major issue, but I’m curious if any fellow forum members have experienced something similar. At this moment, I would greatly appreciate hearing success stories from those who have navigated similar challenges in their career and have Eastern European origins or have an Eastern European partner/spouse or live alongside Eastern European neighbours/ colleagues. I have intentionally refrained from specifying my industry to encourage a broader spectrum of responses. I believe this will allow me to gather insights from individuals across various professions, fields and even self-employment.Thanks.AIBU? You are being unreasonable to ask, your lack of success is specific to you and depends on your circumstances. Maybe you lack the qualities to achieve success.ANBU? I, myself, know someone in a similar position.
