To think I should be in smaller clothes by now?

I have recently (over the last 6 months) lost almost 3 stone in weight.

I’m now at the top end of a healthy BMI (12 stone at 5ft10) but am wearing the same clothes I was 6 months ago?!

I definitely look and feel better in them but I don’t feel I was utterly squeezing myself into them before. I’m still a size 14 when I go shopping which is what I was before, and the clothes I had before that felt a bit small are STILL a bit too too small- button dresses gaping at the front etc.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed about this- how is it possible?!

I am the same height as you and at around 12st I was still a size 16!
I think a lot of tall women don't realise how naturally 'wide' we are compared to more petite women. Our shoulders and hips are just a bigger frame!
It hides the weight better when we carry it but it isn't so obvious when we lose it either.

@NE14T

Sorry OP, I can't help with your question but I just wanted to ask you and @Anoana how you've lost that much weight? I need to lose 4 stone but despite calorie counting, doing SW, doing Second Nature, doing Slimpod...nothing seems to be working?!!? I've seen a GP and bloods all fine, no thyroid issue. So how have you both done it?

TidyHomeTidyMind · 25/05/2023 13:21

@Kyse23 I am 16.6st and a size 22 top and 20 bottom.....I couldn't squeeze in a 16 if my life depended on it🤷‍♀️

TidyHomeTidyMind · 25/05/2023 13:22

@Kyse23 I am 16.6st ans a size 22 top and 20 bottom.....I couldn't squeeze in a 16 if my life depended on it@

Agree - I've lost 4st previously (to return to healthy BMI) and people were genuinely shocked at the amount of 4st. They thought I'd just lost a couple of lbs!

Weight comes and goes and it's not noticeable on taller people.

Weight is so weird isn't it! This is 17 stone me

How did you lose the weight? As that affects your body composition and how you'll look overall. If it was diet alone, then you've likely lost muscle mass as well as fat.

adviceseeker22 · 25/05/2023 14:01

No help, as I'm on the other side of the spectrum. Haven't lost much (or any weight) but dropped 2 sizes... I'm a size XS/6/8 and still classified as overweight!

Honestly? Just ate a lot less.

I used to have breakfast, lunch, tea, and sometimes supper.

Now I just have lunch - something like soup - and tea, just something normal.

I don't snack and I don't drink a lot either, can't be arsed with the empty calories.

lemmity · 25/05/2023 14:21

I'm a similar height and I'm a good 3st between dress sizes. I have petite friends who lose half a stone and need a whole new wardrobe (lucky buggers).

NE14T · 25/05/2023 16:28

@kyse you look great! Never would have guessed you weigh that much, you look toned so I’m guessing a lot of it is muscle.

I’ve lost it much the same as PP, just eating less. I do go to SW each week to be weighed for accountability (doesn’t work for some but REALLY works for me), but I don’t really follow the principles.

I don’t really exercise tbh, I walk quite a bit, at least an hour or two each day with going to and from work plus dog walks but I did say I’d start exercising properly once I got to 12 stone so I should probably start 🙈

You've all made me feel better that it is perhaps just being tall, so thanks. It’s a shame as I agree you carry it better being talk but yeah, perhaps 3 stone isn’t that noticeable an amount as I thought it would be- no one has said I look like I’ve lost weight/ look good or anything.

I’ll keep on it and hope to see a difference in clothes size over the next few months.

There was a good photo thread on MyFitnessPal a while back showing before and after photos of people in the same clothes.

I’ve lost weight. My trousers are the same, but I don’t have rolls over the top and they pull up a good 2-3 inches over my waist.

Justcantsayno · 25/05/2023 16:32

I’m the opposite and confused. Recently lost a stone and dropped a dress size , then after a few more weeks dropped another dress size but my weight hasn’t gone down at all ????? My clothes were so baggy and I cannot understand why my weight is the same ?

Athena51 · 25/05/2023 17:00

I'm quite tall and an hourglass shape and I go down (and up) sizes really slowly as I carry my weight evenly all over. If you're an apple shape with skinny limbs then if you lose a few inches off your waist you're down a couple of sizes.

I'm losing inches but over my whole body, it just takes longer. That said I am nearly 6 stone down now (with 3, 3 and a half stone to go) and I am a 14-16 now down from a 22/24 Smile

Haha same, any trousers I managed to keep pretty much cover my nipples now 😆

RichTeaCheddars · 25/05/2023 17:06

I'm short, gain weight evenly everywhere. I go up and down sizes slowly. I find that losing a chunk of weight doesn't necessarily mean changing clothes size, just things hang different. E.g. yoga leggings now come higher up waist and a straight cut t-shirt is now fitting longer and looser. Both looked perfectly fine before and perfectly fine now. It'll be a while until I'm moving down a clothing size.

I'm 5ft 2, 14 stone. I've recently lost a stone and I'm still a size 14-16. I'll still be comfortably in a size 14 until I hit nearly 13 stone.

At 3 stone loss though I would expect to be in a smaller size. But don't let that dishearten you. If you haven't already, measure yourself or find a photo from before and re-create it as close as possible, you'll be able to tell your weight loss from there.

junecat · 25/05/2023 17:16

I'm 5'2" and have lost 10kg. I've gone from size 12 to 8/10. I guess it's a height thing

junecat · 25/05/2023 17:17

I was creeping up to obese on the BMI thing now I'm high end of healthy

OrigamiOwls · 25/05/2023 17:17

I lost 2.5stone a couple of years ago and didn't drop a dress size.

hennybeans · 25/05/2023 17:24

This is an interesting thread. I’m 5’10 and five years ago I lost 4.5 stone, going from a size 22 to 18. And that second size drop only happened at the very end.

Being tall just means weight loss is less noticeable. Especially if you’re like me and carry weight equally all over. I think I had to lose about 2 stone before anyone even noticed!

TidyHomeTidyMind · 25/05/2023 17:35

@Kyse23 bloody hell, you look amazing! One big difference is you have decent boobs......mine are quite small for my height/weight!!!
being tall does have its benefits, we carry weight pretty well but we don't see the loss as quickly either!

Angrymum22 · 25/05/2023 18:02

When I gain weight it goes on all over so my shape stays the same but everything gets bigger. The same when I loose weight. The only time anyone noticed recently was during the first lockdown. I had a bad back and it was too painful to prepare food so essentially I starved. I had no appetite due to the drugs they gave me. When I met up with friends 3 months later it was obvious I’d dropped a good size.
I think if you store your weight in a specific place it has less effect on size when you loose it.

Hubblebubble · 25/05/2023 18:06

@RichTeaCheddars I'm 5 ft 3, 11 stone and in a size 14.

mumlikeaboss · 25/05/2023 18:15

Ditto what people have said about old clothes being stretched and fitting bigger than new stuff in the same size...

Also I'm 6 foot tall and I have to lose a LOT of weight before it really translates to a clothes size, sounds like you have the same problem!!
