TMI blood when using toilet

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 17:26

so this isn't a should I go to doctor I have been

noticed blood when I quoted around 4 years ago finally went to doctors about three years ago who said I had a fissure- ok I thought.

but it's most times I go to the toilet it doesn't get any worse and I have had no other changed just that for nearly four years

so back to doctors who gave me a qfit test which came bag positive so red flagged for a colonoscopy. I knew there was blood when I wiped so I don't know why this has knocked me so much. I am obviously very nervous incase I have the big c and after 4 years will it have spread

any positive stories?

What colour is the blood?

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 17:38

Bright red always

Any other symptoms?

Quinoawoman · 24/05/2023 17:48

I had this last summer, along with diarroeah. My mum had bowel cancer at 55 and I'm 41 so I was worried. Referred for colonoscopy, turned out to be ulcerative colitis and a fairly minor case at that. I was so relieved. It's under control now with medication.

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 17:49

No other symptoms bowel habits the same weight is the same not overly tired just the usual work mum tired on a Friday night

I'm not a medical person, just someone with poo fascination. I once went into work with a bleeding ulcer and said goodbye to my students in case I didn't see them again. Turns out I'd eaten too much beetroot.

Red blood is usually a sign of haemorrhoids or fissures. And as you've been diagnosed with a fissure, that makes sense. It's good that you're getting it checked out because no one can ever say it's definitely not serious, but its far, far more likely to be something benign although still not something you want.

Remember, the fit test is just saying you have blood in your poo and you already know that so actually you've not learned anything new or bad, just information that ties in with a previous diagnosis.

I keep trying to be rational and say if it was anything more serious I'd have more symptoms developed then I think I'm being naive

I have the same and it's been about 6 years now. Not blood every time but comes and goes, and normally feels sore when there is blood. Got a telephone appointment with the GP booked for end of June 🤦🏻‍♀️ just to double check things.

Lilliflip · 24/05/2023 18:08

I have crohns and sometimes see blood, also have a little pile which sometimes bleeds.
If you’re only going 2-3 days it’s quite possible your stool is quite hard / big and tears your rectum a bit on the way out.

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 18:14

It is quite hard when I go and can sometimes be sore which would be when I would see most blood. Just so worried I have left it too late and if it's cancer it will have spread after 4 years

Ask for a calprotectin test. This is a stool test which measures the inflammation in the bowel.
DH has ulcerative colitis. He was going to the toilet up to 40 times a day, accidents in the night, stomach and rectal pain, severe bleeding at times. Doing pretty OK now except he gets tired extremely easily.
For what it's worth, yours sound like constipation or complications relating to that but good to get these things checked.

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 18:27

I never have diaherrea that's why I don't think colitis

I understand that @MumlifeSumlife. I always think the worse with the rational that if its bad news, I'll be prepared and if it's good news it'll be a lovely relief. Also if I think good news, I might be tempting fate. It makes sense to me but when someone else thinks like, I roll my eyes. 😁
#totally intolerant!

I think its more likely to be problematic to have blood in diarrhoea than when you're constipated. Because a large hard poo would be more likely to put pressure on and open up a fissure. It's sort of creating a mechanical injury if you see what I mean. Everything you're saying makes it even more likely to be the fissure rather than cancer.

I have had an anal fissure for 5 years now. It has been operated on twice, unsuccessfully. Pooing was extremely painful. I am now on long term laxatives to keep my stools soft and poo 2 or 3 times a day, but it is easy, no straining is required, it doesn't hurt my fissure and it rarely bleeds now. If you are not going for a few days then harder more compacted poo is going to make that fissure bleed each time you go.

Hopefully there is nothing more sinister going on.

See I can't see the fissure the doctor 3 years ago said she could but the most recent one said she couldn't see it which has confused me as the blood is the same and the wince when I go is there same (when it's a hard one) sorry tmi

@MumlifeSumlife I have colitis but never had or have diarrhoea. Just the bright red bleeding and a feeling of needing the toilet at times when there is nothing there to come out.

Did you have the blood for long?

@MumlifeSumlife I've have exactly the same thing with constipation and piles and have had for years. I also had a positive FIT test and have just returned from my colonoscopy this afternoon. I was beside myself with worry despite having no other symptoms but my father died of bowel cancer, my brain was in overdrive!
However everything was fine; the procedures was much easier than I anticipated especially with the sedative. They found 5 polyps which were removed there and then plus said I said had piles. The polyps have been sent to be analysed but the consultant didn't think there is anything to worry about.

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 19:09

Oh that's great news I have mine next week and I can't even eat with the worry I am driving my OH crazy crying with worry it's just such a horrible feeling so glad you are ok!

MissFritton65 · 24/05/2023 19:15

@MumlifeSumlife I totally understand and was the same. I had to wait 5 weeks from getting my letter.....was the longest 5 weeks of my life!
I'm no doctor but you sound very similar to me with your bowel habits so hopefully you'll be fine too!
Take care and take the sedation.

declutteringmymind · 24/05/2023 19:21

Try and add some fibre to your diet and see if that improves things while you wait.

I put chia seeds in my morning kefir, and have switched to brown where possible- rice, bread, wraps etc and see if that helps.

MumlifeSumlife · 24/05/2023 19:33

I will try that I generally feel fine just I have read some horror stories and got myself into a panic

Yes my father had exactly the same. Test revealed blood and colonoscopy showed polyps which were quickly treated. No problems since.

Thank you all so much every other forum I had read were horror stories this has really settled me
