To go to A&E..?

I had my haemorrhoids banded around 6pm this evening as an outpatient. Ever since I've been in absolute agony. 4 codeine, 4 paracetamol a bath and 2 hot waters bottles later and the pain still isn't subsisting. Is this normal or should I go to a&e? Labour was less painful!

When you were discharged did they give you a number to ring if you had problems?

I'd start with that first.

vipersnest1 · 22/05/2023 23:34

Ring the ward that you were admitted on to. They will be able to advise what to do, and it might save you spending hours at A&E.

Daisythecat15 · 22/05/2023 23:35

I've heard hemorrhoid surgery is severely painful. Not sure what a&e would be able to do for you. Have you tried ibuprofen as well? Anti inflammatory may be what you need.

This is what I would do too.

alexdgr8 · 22/05/2023 23:42

wouldn't it have been done in the day surgery unit ?
would anyone be there now ?
OP, how about ringing 111.

Mumof1andacat · 22/05/2023 23:56

Would imagine it was done on the day surgery unit which would likely be closed now. Was there no number given for you to call within the next 48hrs post op? Think it might be an a and e visit which is perfectly reasonable

backawayfatty1 · 22/05/2023 23:59

Call up where you had the surgery otherwise call NHS 24 or NBU to go to a&e. I had internal hemorrhoids removed under a general anesthetic, was ok. Had external & internal removed while awake - agony through the night. Turned out to be the placement of one of the hemorrhoids that was banded - it was on the section between back passage & vagina - was agony. Needed a stronger prescription to get me by. Pain subsided with dyhydricodine (sp) & much better after a couple of days

YANBU, go, get checked

babysofthands · 23/05/2023 05:10

Thanks all. I'm on hold to 111 at the moment as I'm not sure I can take the pain much longer x

My mother in law had this operation and this is exactly what she was like the first few days.

babysofthands · 23/05/2023 05:24

@Torturedsoul what did she do? The doctor made me feel like I shouldn't have any pain x

It’s always painful. Lie down with pillow under your bottom . Cool pack. Regular paraacetamol, ibuprofen and codeine. Take laxatives too suggest lactulose. Call your surgical team this morning if you still struggling. ( consultant secretary) . Not ED at this point in time.

Capturetotalelotion · 23/05/2023 06:21

It was worse than my 52 hi our back to back labour. The bad pain lasted about 48 hours. Swore I’d never have it done again, good luck!

Yummymummy2020 · 23/05/2023 06:22

I hate when they tell you something won’t be painful after and what to expect /do if it is. That sounds awful op. I think bad pain Is a good reason for a and e. But I agree to try the ward first, they might be able to organise a perscription of something stronger for you!

babysofthands · 23/05/2023 08:06

@Capturetotalelotion was that from banding or surgery? The doctor was so adamant it shouldn't hurt.. I had a 42 min labour and would do that again any day over this!!

Daisythecat15 · 23/05/2023 23:37

I can't believe your doctor said it wouldn't hurt. Every person I've ever spoken to who's had this procedure said the recovery is intensely painful. Sorry OP! Hope you're getting some relief now?

TimesRwo · 23/05/2023 23:40

Haemorrhoid surgery is one of the most painful things I have ever been through. The doctor simply said I would be uncomfortable after but my goodness I was in agony. Took me a good few days to feel remotely normal.

So sorry OP. It does get better though.

Changethetoner · 23/05/2023 23:45

I had this procedure done (banding) and was told it shouldn't hurt. It didn't. It was very uncomfortable, but not painful as such. If your's is really painful, it could mean the bands are positioned wrongly.

Dibdabble · 23/05/2023 23:52

I had surgery rather than banding but I am not exaggerating when I say it was the single most excruciating experience of my life and I spent times in the bath sobbing that I wanted to die! I would never have it done again no matter how bad they came back.

I hope it has settled for you now. I went to my GP and was prescribed diclofenac that helped. I took only codeine when absolutely desperate as I was worried about constipation. Hot baths are your friend for the foreseeable.
