Not sure if I should complain or not?

We've come away to a 'lodge retreat' this week, arrived today and staying until Friday. We have been here twice before and loved it - had no problems at all. It is just me, DH and DD. This particular site does allow dogs in selected lodges and you have to pay extra for this (we don't have a dog but it's relevant!).

When we arrived I noticed they had left a little bag with dog treats and a brand new dog toy here. The porch area where this is smelt a bit doggy but I opened all the windows and thought it would air it out a bit. We've just had a tea outside and I've been sat out since we arrived as the weather is so nice.

We've just come in so DH can do bedtime, and I've sat down on the sofa properly for the first time and all I can smell is dog. Everything is super clean but the smell is obviously in the furniture (including the fabric dining chairs too as I've sat over there and can smell it.) I do have allergies and I'm not sure if I'm just being paranoid but I'm starting to get a bit irritated too.

Their reception closed at 8pm but is open again at 9am. Do you think it's unreasonable for me to complain about this? It seems like we have been out here by mistake due to the pet treats. It's a busy site and I'm worried they will be completely full and won't be able to move us, but we've paid £930 for 4 nights and I'm a bit gutted as it's really bothering me.

I think you need to talk to reception about this.

Dacadactyl · 22/05/2023 20:37

That is totally rank and I'd be pissed off too. But then, part of me thinks that's the risk you take if you go somewhere pet friendly. I give all those places a wide berth, for precisely the reasons you've stated. And I certainly don't want to eat a meal I've paid good money for near to a dog in a restaurant.

I'd complain and ask to be moved.

Yes I see what you mean. I'd never expect to be put in a pet lodge if I'd not specified it though. This is the third time we've been back here and we've always been placed in a normal one, so I didn't really think about it.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are at the other end of the lodge and non-dog smelling thankfully!

I have a dog and this would still really annoy me, I wouldn't choose to stay anywhere that's pet friendly for this reason (don't take dog on holiday). I'd most certainly be at reception first thing.

fayepetra · 22/05/2023 20:45

Actually now I think about it - by chance we had the lodge directly next door last year (on a site of over 100!) and the people who were in our current lodge definitely didn't have a dog with them. So maybe they just put you wherever. I'm still going to speak to them first thing though.

it definitely shouldn't be like that so yes talk to reception

Treesoutsidemywindow · 22/05/2023 20:52

At the very least if they can't move you OP, I would expect them to offer to come in and do a deep clean, and maybe steam clean or Febreze the soft furnishings. I certainly wouldn't be happy with a doggy smell having paid that amount for 4 days.

fayepetra · 22/05/2023 21:53

Yes it's a lot to pay and not be happy. I can't sit on the sofa or chairs and watch tv because the smell is too much!

Just wanted to update - I went and spoke to reception this morning and they couldn't have been nicer. They were really apologetic and said that's not right, and you shouldn't be able to tell if you're allocated a pet-friendly lodge. They sent someone in to do an extra deep clean while we were out and it's fresh as a daisy now Smile
