After bills and food, but not including petrol, socialising, clothes, kids activities, cosmetics, holidays, birthdays/Xmas, savings etc…

Doing ok or struggling?

Inspired by a very old thread. Interested to see how times may have changed…

That's how much I have for food and petrol
And any other expenses now
It's very hard

DiIIy · 22/05/2023 20:29

It's not struggling as there's money left. But it's not great for living, saving, etc etc.

thecolourpurple49230 · 22/05/2023 20:30

They said the £100 was after putting away savings

thecolourpurple49230 · 22/05/2023 20:31

Oh wait never mind me

DiIIy · 22/05/2023 20:31

It doesn't say that. It says after bills and food.

Dacadactyl · 22/05/2023 20:31

Im good at economising and could do it if I absolutely had to, but it wouldn't be much fun. I would feel like we were only surviving with that amount extra left over and we aren't in the South East.

thecolourpurple49230 · 22/05/2023 20:31

Yes sorry, my mistake.

BluebellBlueballs · 22/05/2023 20:32

The petrol could be most of that depending on commuting costs.

Assuming fuel use is low its not too bad. Not great but bearable.

DiIIy · 22/05/2023 20:32

No worries just seen your reply

Ponoka7 · 22/05/2023 20:33

It's similar, if not more than the people who live around me have. I know people who have to live in credit for clothes etc. It's manageable. You've just got to cut your cloth.

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 22/05/2023 20:34

I'd love to have £100 a week after everything.

In our early 60s, I'm on PIP (£68.10, paid 4 weekly) following a stroke. My husband gets £109 a week SSP (heart trouble) and a private pension of £900 every 3 MONTHS. House paid for, but it's crippling us at the moment (and has been since he went on SSP in Feb)

No, any savings have to come out of the £100 too. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

I manage on 500 a month for all that you have said and for food, three of us in home. You can manage but there is little joy

Namenamechangechangechange · 22/05/2023 20:36

£100 on fuel
£100 kids
£100 luxuries
£100 contingency is how I'd split that over a 4 week month

thecolourpurple49230 · 22/05/2023 20:36

It was clear, sorry my mistake for not reading correctly.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 22/05/2023 20:37

Struggling, especially with more than one child to clothe etc. And especially if you have high petrol costs.

You need to put your circumstances into a benefit calculator on gov.uk website, to see if you are entitled to anything else.

My fuel is £100 a week so definitely struggling

gratefulheart · 22/05/2023 20:41

PalindromemordnilaP · 22/05/2023 20:45

We spend £25 on petrol per week (low commuting costs as DH now works from home), then allow ourselves £40 "spends" which is to cover all outings/treats, plus clothes and extra spends. Last week almost all of this went on school class photos.

This £40 is after £17 have been put into a 'car/house maintenance fund' and '20' into a Christmas/birthdays fund.

I think all of that adds up to £102 per week so similar to your amount. We manage OK most of the time, but things like school photos and school holidays soon make things more difficult!

My employer underpaid me by £50 this month and stated as it was only a "small amount" they couldn't transfer it to me and I'd have to wait until next month's pay to have it back. £50 less makes things really tight.

SW2002 · 22/05/2023 23:24

I'd call that struggling, but we all live according to what we earn don't we!

UsingChangeofName · 22/05/2023 23:36

A lot will depend on how much petrol is needed.
