Dual carriage way near miss

I’m pretty sure I’m in the right but please let me know if something has changed.

Driving along a dual carriage way at 70. Petrol station and a young women decided to speed up coming on from the petrol station and just pull in front of me, I had to slam on my breaks. There was a car waiting to pull in but she went round them and just joined the carriage way.

She then flipped me off so I wasn’t too grown up and sounded my horn and flipped her off too.

I was always taught that people on the dual carriage way have right of way and it’s a give way basically. You wait till it’s clear to join.

This happened to me on a very fast road, the moron just pulled out- I couldn't believe it. A transit was in the outside lane coming up fast but I just had to pull out in front of him or I would have hit the person who pulled out. Luckily the transit driver saw what was happening and braked to accommodate me. I childishly sat on the horn but it was such a close call.

You shouldn't be driving a car with breaks anywhere, let alone on a dual carriageway, nor should you be breaking it further.

MyBubble · 23/05/2023 00:07

Why was you doing 70 on a duel carriage way ?
there was a petrol station with a short slip rd so I’m guessing it was in a built up area
which then makes you doing 70 over the speed limit ?
but she still shouldn’t of pulled out on you I’m just surprised you saw her doing all this

before hand and didn’t think to slow down !

There may not even have been a right hand lane of course.

Then it wasn't a dual carriageway

Time for you to go and refresh yourself on the Highway Code.
You’re wrong - a dual carriageway can have one lane of traffic in each direction, and a single carriageway can have two - do some light reading :)

She should of waited. There's one like this near me, I'll always move over if possible but at rush hour it rarely is.

I believe my OCD deserves consideration too.

GoodChat · 23/05/2023 09:14

@CharlottenBurger your OCD doesn't mean you need to point out other peoples spelling mistakes

Thanks for the judgement. Duly noted. I don't know if I 'need' to do the things that I feel compulsions to do, but it is very hard to resist them sometimes, and MN does not allow me to go back and alter things I have written.

Zarataralara · 23/05/2023 09:17

If you couldn’t move over, ie both lanes full, then she has to wait.

I dunno... feels a bit risky to be doing 70 in the conditions you describe - busy, both lanes full.

Yes it is ultimately the responsibility of the vehicle joining the road to pull out safely but vehicles already on road should try to assist by leaving adequate spacing and/or pulling into the next lane if it is safe to do so

It shouldn't be necessary for cars in the slip lane to come to a standstill and wait for a space

Its hard to comment without having been there”

This. I always move out if I can.

70 is the national limit on a dual carriageway unless it's marked otherwise. Depending where you are in the country there are most definitely bits of roads like that.
