To not be happy with this response from Monzo?

I have a monzo account in my own name. Last week, DH received a monzo card that looked legitimate, same type of card as mine, same envelope etc. However he hasn't applied for a monzo account and I've not made any requests to make my account joint. He's been liaising with monzo who have been slow to reply (after an hour on hold he was told to email). Their last email stated that 'it has now been sorted and no further input is required'.

They haven't given us any information about who attempted to open the account, how they got his details, and was it a scam? Had an actual account in his name been opened and how, etc.

We've checked experian and put a temporary block on credit applications. All seems to be ok there.

AWBU for wanting to know more? If monzo are not forthcoming, who do we speak to in order to put pressure on them to provide us with more information about what's happened?

It is your husband who needs to deal with it since it is an account in his name.

What was the previous conversation for them to say it had been sorted?

jaychops · 22/05/2023 13:57

DH is dealing with it via email.

The previous conversation was in relation to the above queries - was the card legitimate and if so had an account been opened in his name and by whom, as it wasn't him.

Back in the bad old 90s, credit card companies just used to send you a card, pre-approved, if their system said you'd be a viable customer.

Why do you assume nefarious motives here? Monzo say they've dealt with it. You aren't entitled to be included in their processes.

All DH needs to do is cut the card up.

Because we've been a victim of fraud in the past. I know it could be much worse ie. a credit card or a loan, but bank account applications are visible on credit searches and there are options to have an overdraft with this type of account. I'm surprised you'd be relaxed about this and not concerned that potentially someone has made an application in your name in regards to finances. It may have been normal in the 90s but not so much now. He understandably would like clarification from monzo about how it has been dealt with- was there an account, has it been closed, and how the account came to be opened. Surely he has a right to know what has happened with his personal details.

Yes I had this about a year ago! Was worried it was some kind of scam with someone using my details but on contacting them i got the same response. Never did get to the bottom of it. Didn't even make sense as some kind of marketing activity either.

It's standard practice of them not to divulge further information; all you can do is check your credit which you already have. Policies are very strict on what information agents can disclose, in case they inadvertently tip off a criminal.

Hankunamatata · 22/05/2023 19:21

Is there an entry on his credit file for the account?

Franklin2000 · 22/05/2023 19:23

We wouldn’t give you any further information I’m afraid. Accounts can be opened with a matching name, address and date of birth to a credit check. If you’re telling us it’s fraudulent we won’t give any details about how it’s been opened, when etc because it isn’t your dh’s information. You just have to keep a check on Experian etc.

UnfortunateTypo · 22/05/2023 19:27

Annoyingly they can’t actually tell you. We had someone open an account with a catalog, first thing we knew about it was when three credit agreements arrive. We hasn’t received any goods, and the company obviously knew where they had sent it to, but wouldn’t give us the details. I’d report this to Action Fraud if I were you, as well as keeping an eye on Experian etc.
