How much energy does a dishwasher actually use?

qwerty81 · 21/05/2023 21:55

My housemate turns on the dishwasher every single night. I want to say something to him because I’m trying to cut down on energy prices but I don’t want to say anything and cause unnecessary agg if it doesn’t actually make much of a difference compared to washing up.

Do many people use it every night?

OP posts:
Shoxfordian · 21/05/2023 21:56

My dh and I use ours twice a day

Anoushkaka · 21/05/2023 21:59

At least twice a day in my house. Two adults and three kids. Put it on an eco wash each time but not sure if it makes a difference cost wise.

To be honest if there are just two of you living together I wouldn't have a dishwasher.

MuffinToSeeHere · 21/05/2023 21:59

I don't see what she's doing wrong surely most people put it on daily?

It costs approximately £3 a week if you use it once a day.

Who made you the dishwasher police? Only two in our household and it’s my favourite kitchen thing. I am not washing dishes by hand ever again if I can avoid it.!

Oysterbabe · 21/05/2023 22:06

Once a day is perfectly reasonable.

JMSA · 21/05/2023 22:07

How full is it when he switches it on?

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 21/05/2023 22:13

He could switch it on 5 times a day for n my house as long as I don't have to physically wash the dishes! Priorities OP.

AP5Diva · 21/05/2023 22:17

Electric rates are cheaper at night so if you have to pay for electric, that’s the best time to put on the dishwasher. Most only cost 20p a cycle.

I'm single. Should I send mine back?

Electric rates can be cheaper at night, but many aren't.

Carryonkeepinggoing · 21/05/2023 22:23

I thought they were supposed to be more energy efficient than washing up by hand? They definitely use less water than people use on average when washing by hand.

This is not true for most people.

that said, I don’t think it is hugely costly to run. I’ve heard the ‘it uses less hot water than hand washing’ thing before and it sounds feasible to me.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 21/05/2023 22:30

Google says that an average dishwasher uses between 1.2 and 1.5 KWh of electricity, and as the capped rate is currently about 31p per kWh then it’s 37 to 45p a wash. Hard to get too worked up about, and almost certainly cheaper than hand washing-up!

AuntieJoyce · 21/05/2023 22:41

My hot water tank goes on once a day. It would go on regardless of whether I use the water to wash up or not. So the argument that running a dishwasher is cheaper than washing up just doesn’t hold water.

See what I did there.

Wtf?! I can’t wait until we move into our new house which has space for a dishwasher. I’m so sick of having to wash up.

What are you talking about? Cooking for two people each day + mugs, glassware etc, could fill up a dishwasher daily. Maybe if you ate a lot of no prep freezer food type dishes it wouldn’t but otherwise a dishwasher for two still makes sense.

Sissynova · 21/05/2023 22:52

Generally it costs less to use the dishwasher for a full load than it does to hand wash the same amount of dishes.

Either way this sound like an incredibly petty way to live while sharing and will make for an unpleasant environment. I’m sure there are things you to that are more expensive, prefer the heating on longer, have longer showers, keep the fridge open while you pour the milk etc.

If 2 adults and 3 kids qualifies for at least twice a day then surely 2 adults justifies once a day?

Hugasauras · 21/05/2023 23:45

My DH and I bought ours when it was just us pre-kids. No regrets! Washing up sucks and I hate it. Ours goes on at least once a day now sometimes twice. I'd be bereft if he broke (and would order a new one instantly).

In answer to your question, OP, they don't use very much electricity, especially when you compare what it would have cost you to heat the water for washing them by hand anyway. Not a hill to die on.

Nsky62 · 21/05/2023 23:47

Cat and I slimline every other roughly

laundryobsessed · 24/12/2024 12:41

I run mine every day as I cook a lot and have a filter coffee maker which needs daily cleaning. Often cook a lot at dinner (so my neighbour usually has some dinner with me, so another plate/cutlery), and I bake all my own bread from scratch. My dishwasher is a Miele and uses 0.84kwh on the Eco programme. If I make sure the dishwasher is properly loaded (I am very careful with this usually), everything comes out spotless on Eco. I do run an Intensive 75 degree programme every so often to give the machine a workout. Water use is included in my rent so I do not have to worry about that as a cost.

Using Tesco or Aldi own brand tablets, salt and rinse aid from Aldi, it's a pretty cheap affair to run.

All the hot water in my flat is generated on-demand, using electricity, so washing up by hand costs a damn sight more than running my dishwasher.

I live alone.

TLDR - dishwasher is totally worth it to run even for 1 person, especially when Eco programme is used.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/12/2024 13:03

Uses less water, less energy (electricity/gas), better results, everything gets done with more or less zero effort - load, chuck in tablet, press button and walk away - it's worth every penny.
