Accused of hitting parked car

This evening a neighbour came to our door and accused me of hitting their parked car. This absolutly wasn't me. He has a video of "me" driving down the road (although you can't actually see my reg number, it is the same make/model as my car, so very possibly me), but his car isn't in the picture so the "incident" can't be seen. It basically shows about 5m of road with a car driving down, his car is parked around 5m down the road, out of view. He says because he has this video he is going to claim off my insurance.

I think they are targeting me as I have quite a nice car comparative to the other cars on the road. Hundreds of cars would've driven past today, yet he's only picked a video of my car, and it doesn't even show his car.

There is damage to their car, but none to mine. The extent of damage to their car would mean similar or worse damage would be inevitable to the other car.
He's threatening to fraudulently claim off my insurance.

AIBU reporting this to the police?
AIBU to report this to my insurance? I don't want to have a "notification only" on my insurance histroy though as I've not actually been in an accident... but if he does try and make a claim, I want to be prepared.

Already bought a dash cam, getting it fitted later today

This happened to my husband. The police weren’t interested, they said it was a civil matter. They claimed he’d done it outside his work and he couldn’t prove he wasn’t there. The insurance company advised him to accept 50/50 it was so infuriating.

My insurance paid out a false claim because I had an argument with the woman. I tried to take her insurance to court but eventually I got it taken offf my name.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 21/05/2023 15:54

Take photos of your car (showing date/time) and his. You could tip your insurers off too.

someone once accused my car of causing an accident, it was miles away from where I lived so once I told my insurance company this nothing else came of it.

My relative was leaning into the back seat of her car, so standing on the road, bum sticking out and a car sped past taking the door off. The other driver didn't get out, the younger passenger did and was verbally abusive. They made a claim and relatives insurance paid out for an easy life. They missed my sister by inches.

FabFitFifties · 21/05/2023 16:07

She's convinced they were drunk

whynotwhatknot · 21/05/2023 16:18

looks like he doesnt know who it was and all hes got is you driving past at near enough the time it happened

let him file for a claim then tell insurers its not you theres no proof and you refute it

Thanks for all your replies!
I've not told him any of my details, but obviously he knows my address and vehicle reg. He could know my name, depending on whether other neighbours have spoken with him.
I actually did my own CCTV hunting. I've got two videos of the two times I drove home. They have his car in the frame this time. Obviously neither of them show me hittting his car.
The only problem is that I can't "prove" I didn't drive at another ramdom time. It's infuriating. I've contacted the police and reported him to the insurance fraud bureau. Let's see what happens...

He can buy your car insurance details form the insurance database very easily. Lets hope he's not internet nosy savvy.

Summerfun2023 · 21/05/2023 17:57

I've contacted the police and reported him to the insurance fraud bureau.

I hope it works out for you. I wouldn't have gone to great lengths I doubt your insurance would have paid out because there is no prove. Unless there is a mark on your car? You have said there isn't but you are still worried. Are you sure there is no scratch marks on your car that could prove his claim.

lastdayatschool · 21/05/2023 18:00

@Summerfun2023 no need to buy insurance details. One he reports to his own insurance company, they will lookup the OP insurer based on number plate and contact them.

I had a guy run into the back of me last summer - no damage to my car as he hit my towbar, but a fair bit to his.

When I went to renew 6 months later, my premium had increased substantially - when I asked why, my insurers had me logged as 'being in an accident'.

Managed to get them to remove it, but only after a few phone calls.

This happened to my husband, and the insurance paid out and put it as an at fault claim (even though we had photos of his car with no damage and he was nowhere near where they said it happened) because we couldn't prove he didn't i.e he was at home so we didn't have any objective proof, so I would definitely get in front of this.

Anyone who believes that the insurers wouldn't pay out without a battle have clearly never been in this situation before!

I've took photos of both cars last night, thank you :)

They came to mention this today but you took photos of both cars last night. Interesting!

Why?

Not sure why you think he came today? I said "this evening" meaning yesterday. They knocked on my door at 10pm on Saturday night, after which I took the photos. 🤣

Nope, no marks at all on my car. I've submitted photos and 360 videos of my car and his to the police.

I'm worried because I can't "prove a negative". It's not a clear cut case like I'd never been to the area etc. The car is parked on the road I live on. He's claiming I've hit him, I've got CCTV of the two times I left and returned to the house, but I can't get a whole 24 hours of it.

I'm just looking for advice on next steps really... I don't want to fall victim to a clear scam if there's something I could do which I've overlooked.
