To think scrolling Tiktok/instagram videos is bad for attention span and/or mental health?

I am one of lifes worriers but really notice a stark difference in how anxious I am after spending a large amount of time on my phone, scrolling videos. I know the answer to this is to delete the apps and I have resolved to reduce useage until I delete. Once I watch one video, half an hour or longer can pass by. It’s a massive waste of time but it got me thinking it’s new information every ten seconds which is surely overstimulating and a bit overload. Sometimes I learn something useful but more often than not its just meaningless media. AIBU?

It’s true. It reduces attention span as you are programming your brain to constantly search for the next hit of info. I watched a really interesting video about it…on TT!

I think there's proof that scrolling (ever decreasingly shorter) videos negatively impacts attention span.

And, we know social media causes anxiety.

I have teens and preteens.

None of them have TikTok.

Social media limited.

Really sensible

I'm in a job where mobile phones are banned/illegal to take in

Best buy about my job...also, people engage. Not so keen to jump straight on it out of work hours either

I think the cause and effect can go either way. I scroll social media more when my mental health is bad because I can't concentrate on anything for longer and I need a distraction. The less meaningful the better. You'd have to control for this phenomenon to get meaningful data on whether social media is the problem or if it's more complex then that.

Our shortened attention span is the reason the King's coronation was shortened to one and a half hours from three hours for the queen's coronation. The tik tok type videos are responsible. I imagine the congregation would have become restless and twitchy.

I am a slave to my phone and I hate it

I can understand your frustrations and perspective, I'm similar but I use YouTube as background , sometimes I'm listening as I try to listen to educational lectures by different speakers, other times it's random YouTube mixture.

I find scrolling through Instagram relaxing 🙈😳 I do it in bed before I go to sleep and it sends me off! Maybe I’m weird.
