Help me understand this medicine dosage for pet

Please help me understand this medicine dosage for our pet. Label says ‘Give 0.25ml twice daily…Dilute in 4 parts water before administration’

So do i take 0.25ml of medicine then mix with 1ml of water (that’s 4 parts water right?) then give the whole lot?

Or do I mix the whole lot with 4 parts water then take 0.25ml of the mixture for the pet?

Pet needs this medicine tonight and DH who picked up the medicine (and hopefully clarified all this with the vet) is away and I’m not managing to get through to him on phone so thanks for your help!

First option.

Agree, first option.

Absolutely no idea and I get very stressed about that kind of thing, but if you ring vets now (as in emergency vets called vets now, not your own vet immediately 😂) they might be able to clarify over the phone? They've been helpful in the past when something has happened out of hours but doesn't warrant an actual visit to the emergency clinic.

The former - mixing more than you need would be a waste surely.

Is it really 0.25ml - that sounds absolutely minuscule and hard to measure!

IcedBananas · 20/05/2023 20:49

Yes it really is 0.25ml! I have a little syringe with it which should make it measurable. It’s for a Guinea pig. I guess she’s not very big herself so medicine is equally small in dosage

Vet here - I'm guessing it's an antibiotic, baytril/enrobactin or similar? Dilute 0.25ml with 1ml water (as per your first option) - it needs diluting because it can be a bit irritant.

@hilariousnamehere yes I get illogically stressed by these things. I was very 😱😱 what if I get this wrong! 😱

Yes it’s antibiotics to make sure a wound doesn’t get infected. Thanks so much everyone! There’s a clear consensus and a vet confirming option 1 so I went with that and little Guinea pig took her medicine well and is now happily munching on a carrot.
