Injured pigeon - what the hell do I do

shoulditbethishard1 · 20/05/2023 19:04

An injured pigeon has landed on my drive, it looks like it might have been hit by a car, it can flap its wings but it’s like it’s back end is stuck to the floor and it can’t get up.

I think it’s days are numbered but I’ve just been back out there, it’s breathing very heavily, I don’t want it to suffer needlessly but I couldn’t put an end to its misery myself.

vets won’t be interested, RSPB won’t be interested.

what would you do?

What is the reason for these pictures you keep putting on here?

It's really silly that this poster ''Almost Heaven'' is putting pics of kid's toys up, and a swimming man.. like something a child of 11 would do.

Is it half term yet?

Putting such childish stuff up because you don't agree with what another member thinks or says comes across as juvenile and rather bullying @AlmostHeaven .

To be fair, I think there’s people on here being deliberately inflammatory with talk of spades and eating pigeon so they probably deserve it. @oakleaffy

Chill out everyone progress has been made!

my lovely brother has come to the rescue, pigeon has been extracted from under the car, it’s now in a box with a towel, air holes and a lid. It’s been put in my garage until tomorrow morning. No ringing of necks has taken place. We really can’t see what’s wrong with it, wings appear to be flapping ok and no obvious sign of injury. If won’t be eaten by a cat or a fox, I’ll take it to the vets first thing in the morning

I’m less chilled tbh because avian flu is currently rampaging through the wild birds in the U.K. and you’ve now had your brother handle an obviously sick bird with a key symptom of avian flu- laboured breathing.

Humans can catch avian flu from sick birds.

Is killing, cleaning, and eating a pidgeon morally different from eating a chicken that someone else has killed?

I've got huge plain windows and two pigeons flew into them and injured themselves last summer (before I got deterrents).

The first one couldn't stand and kept falling over. I put it in a box with some water for a few hours and when it looked a little more stable I took it out the box and put it on the lawn. He wobbled around for a few seconds and then flew up on to the shed. I think it must have been concussed and it takes them a while to come around properly.

The second one unfortunately died in the box which was sad but he bled from his mouth so I don't think there's anything that could have been done.

You'd want to have a small appetite & be pretty desperate for food to go 'killing, cleaning, and eating [ONE] pidgeon <sic>'

🙄

I don't know if this is outing, but my mother's maiden name was Pidgeon (with a 'd') and she was called 'Pigeon Pie' at school.

Ginmonkeyagain · 21/05/2023 09:00

I think the course of action depends on the circumstances. I have dispatched a very seriously injured pigeon before - it got on the wrong end of a cat and its throat was almost ripped out, there was no way it would have survived a trip to the vet.

I grew up on a farm so know how to wring a bird's neck quickly and efficiently and have a fairly strong stomach.

it rather shocked my neighbour who witnessed it from their front window though.

I have met 'live off the land' types that would do just that.

+1 for the 'sic', wholly deserved. My mother was a Pidgeon; the birds that infest my home town are pigeons. BUT the OED does list 'pidgeon' as an alternate spelling for the bird.

The kid's toys are called 'Trolls' (I had quite a collection when I was 8, so, yes, I get that 'childish' thing). I suspect there is a (barely) veiled accusation there. How I hate those photos with big white text that people put on social media.

Are you saying pigeon pie is off the menu?

The thought of eating an injured or sick pigeon isn’t appealing- unless one is a fox or carrion crow-
but I get your point about the killing and cleaning and eating of wood pigeons compared to buying a bird from a supermarket where someone else has done the dispatching.

There was a woman who called a very expensive equine vet out for a humbug snail.

She was very wealthy and quite dottyville.

Her old cottage still bears the name she bestowed on it: “ Snail 🐌 Cottage”

The vet couldn’t do much.

He probably didn’t mind- he was paid a call-out fee and dealing with a humbug snail is easier than dealing with a feisty TB colt.

SallyWD · 21/05/2023 20:09

So what's happened to the pigeon?! I want to know!

Yes I saw the last post. I just wondered if it had survived or been put to sleep.
