If you have visited Rome?

If you have visited Rome could you please help me with a couple of questions about seeing the sights such as the trevi fountain and the coloseeum etc. Do we need to book these in advance? If so where is best to book them.

Thank you in advance :)

Trevi fountain is just there in a square, free to see. Better at dusk or night as they light it up. Colosseum needs a ticket iirc, maybe worth booking to avoid a queue.
Don't miss the catacombs and walking on the original stones of the Appian Way ( if you're a history nut like me)

JulieHoney · 20/05/2023 11:54

The trevi fountain - and all the fountains - are just out in the open. It’s best to pre-book the Vatican if you’re interested, but we didn’t pre-book the Colosseum or Pantheon.

electricmoccasins · 20/05/2023 11:54

You don’t need to book for Trevi Fountain.

You are advised to book online for colosseum. You can get a deal with the Roman forum at the same time so it’s cheaper. Can do guided or self guided. I have always done self guided. Booking will allow you to queue jump. Trip advisor do a range of bookings.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 20/05/2023 11:54

Absolutely love Rome!
Most of the main sights are walking distance from one another and the buses are also good and easy to navigate.
The Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps etc. you don’t need to book as you don’t ‘enter’ but I highly recommend booking a Colloseum tour, Vatican and Borghese Gallery, if your planning on visiting them.
If you’re visiting the Pantheon, get there early as the line gets long quickly.

Wonderful city! Enjoy!!

Oh and I found the DK Rome guidebook to be invaluable.

Timesawastin · 20/05/2023 11:55

Watch a Mary Beard doc to get some ideas for sights!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 20/05/2023 11:56

The Coliseum should definitely be booked. The Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are just there - you don't go in as such. We just walked into the Pantheon. The last three are all fairly close together as I recall.

Others can tell you about the Vatican, Forum etc.

electricmoccasins · 20/05/2023 11:56

Oh don’t forget Keats’ grave and Shelley’s memorial stone at the Piramide stop on the metro

Book the colosseum in advance! There are no ticket booths open (or at least there weren’t when we were there in feb) only a qr code to scan - we went for a week, tried to go on the first day but only managed to get a ticket for the last day of our stay! It is one ticket for the forum and colosseum. The trevi fountain doesn’t need a ticket, it is just a fountain on a (small) street. Go early in the morning or late evening if you want a photo without a million other people. Have a great trip, we really enjoyed it. The qr code took us to the coopculture.it website so I guess that is the official website but I’m sure other places would sell tickets too.

Dedodee · 20/05/2023 12:00

If you decide to go to the Vatican museum it's very large and takes ages to get to the Sistine Chapel.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/05/2023 12:03

I picked up a HUGE tip from MN when we went to Rome; I assume you can book online for the colosseum but if you haven’t then just buy joint tickets on the day for colosseum and forum at the forum-there is virtually no queue there. There will be hundreds of people queuing for colosseum tickets and you will be able to walk right past them to the front.

TheGuv1982 · 20/05/2023 12:06

There’s a sight seeing bus that’s hop on, hop off. Travels by all the sites so you can be dropped off at the ones you want to see.

Been some time since I went, but there used to be guys outside the colosseum dressed as legionaries, who were part of organised visits. You paid a fee, jumped the queue and the group has a guided tour.

Rome is an amazing place, enjoy.

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2023 12:08

Book absolutely everything in advance - but make sure you are doing it on the official sites as it's easy to be fooled.

You don't need to book the Pantheon or Trevi Fountain, they are just there. But for everything else, things get v busy with long hot queues. Some attractions eg Borghese Palace you also need a time slot.

The Forum is way more interesting than the Colosseum (unless you book a Colosseum tour) and can easily be done by yourself with a guidebook. However it is big and hot with minimal shade.

Unless you are art crazy you can skip 99% of the Vatican Museum. A guidebook will tell you which churches are worth going in - there are soooo many. Have some 1Euro coins to switch the lights on.

HurdyGurdy19 · 20/05/2023 12:08

If you have time, visit the Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. It's fascinating, if a little macabre

You can do a lot using the metro and walking

we paid for a tour of the Vatican but it was only to get us in and beat queues. I was proposed to by suprise on the steps of St Peters and we never met up with our tour guide after that😆

AgrathaChristie · 20/05/2023 12:09

If it’s been raining watch out for the cobbles in the Trevi fountain square, they’re lethal. Had to get the first aid kit out to help two people. I’m sure other cobbled streets are as bad, this is my memory of the Trevi fountain though.

Whataretheodds · 20/05/2023 12:14

Def need to book the Borghese.
Don't need to book the Pantheon unless it's one of the museums for free days.

We booked a combined colosseum and forum small group tour which was great for bringing it to life.

Also early morning group tour St Peter's and Vatican - having a guide allowed us to skip most of the content and focus on the bits we both wanted to see.

In 4 days we got public transport once (apart from to/from airport). Just walked everywhere. But that was a LOT of walking

Clarinet1 · 20/05/2023 12:17

Sorry, never been to Rome but you simply must scream in the Sistine Chapel.

ClareBlue · 20/05/2023 12:19

I always think the Victor Emmanuel monument is often overlooked as a highlight. For some reason everytime we are there I love it even more. Also, do walk around in the evening and after night fall. Rome by night is different to by day. Safe in the tourist areas, subject to any city general precautions.

Neighbours87 · 20/05/2023 12:26

You can buy a joint 2 day ticket for the Roman forum and the colosseum at either site. Definitely go to the Roman forum first, much less of a queue and it will allow you into the express queue at the colosseum. Have a great time beautiful city. Enjoy just walking around, seeing beautiful churches. Also eat away from the squares far cheaper. Last but not least don’t bother with dessert in restaurants the gelato is fab

LIZS · 20/05/2023 12:30

You can book a combined ticket for the Colosseum and Palatine/Forum even if you visit on different days. Plenty of sites are visible from just walking about like Trevi fountain, Piazza Navona, Circus Maximus, Appian Way, Theatre of Marcellus etc. Baths of Caracalla are interesting to visit as is the Pantheon. Roman Museums can be done on a combined ticket. Vatican museum book an early or late slot to avoid worst of crowds. St Peters you queue up for. Pop in and out of any churches as you walk about, you often have to pay to visit the works of art within side chapels.

Serena73 · 20/05/2023 12:31

We went in school holidays and were very glad to have booked a ticket for the Colosseum - there was a two hour queue and we just walked straight in. Roman Forum and Palatine Hill were also accessible with the same ticket.

Trevi Fountain as everyone has said does not require a ticket. It does get very busy around it but it's fine. The Vatican had a two hour queue as well, we were going to go there last minute but didn't because of this and children didn't want to.

Poppasocks · 20/05/2023 12:32

Nothing to add that hasn't already been said but just to echo Rome is amazing!! _

Oh actually - we did get a train to Naples and visited Pompeii if that appeals?
