Anal fissures

My username sums it up! I’m absolutely sick of this. I keep getting anal fissures. I’m not constipated and passing hard stools which is causing it, nor am I having diarrhoea and wiping excessively. I’ve tried every type of toilet paper available, I’ve tried using water instead of wiping, I’ve tried anusol, a spray from the doctors, suppositories, creams, everything.

I cant stop getting anal fissures. It’s been non stop for 6 months now (not sure if it’s the same fissures or different ones but it’s been 6 months of bleeding and agony. Doctor isn’t interested and I’ve been back multiple times already.

why does this keep happening? Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop it?

Diltiazem was the only thing that ever touched the sides. That and - oddly as it’s a bit counter intuitive - sitting on a hot water bottle. It took best part of ten years for it to become manageable though. And I still have bad days. It is, literally shit and you have my sympathy

Try keeping a cotton wool soaked in apple cider vinegar pressed against it to shrink it when it’s bothersome, but other than that I don’t know. I can suggest taking vitamins and drinking enough water, a different toilet pooping position, a change in diet (less spicy food and more veg?) and doing kegal exercises (strengthen your pelvic floor) … hope something helps!

There's a long running support thread on here somewhere. I had a decade of them thanks midwife who wouldn't let me have post CS stool softener but botox seemed to do the trick in the end.
The pain and not being able to eat much was miserable all those years.

Hatemylife2023 · 19/05/2023 22:29

Had AF a long time since late teens. Nothing worked except very much bespoke cream I got around aged 20 (was fortunate to see a specialist clinic near Broomfield hospital at time) and was advised to take Lactulose in addition which I’m now on.

I last heard sitting in coconut oil bath water may help but it’s not something I’d gotten round to trying out.

I had ‘accidents’ pooped my pants a lot last year/leaked liquid from there - it totally was something else; after losing a little weight and a back operation later but really please don’t suffer in silence if it’s not getting better. AF should be taken more seriously.

Has the doctor examined you? Is it just fissures ? Could it possibly be piles too?

Can you ask to see someone else in the middle of a flare up?

CherryRipe1 · 19/05/2023 22:34

Lactose, you want a stool softener not bulker. Diltiazem, Botox, sitz baths, lots of water. If all else fails eventually you may need a fissure procedure. Don't let the go fob you off.

Whyemseeaye · 19/05/2023 22:34

Poor you OP, they're awful and so painful.

I had mine for a year after DS was born. It still flares up now, four years later!

I'm sure you doing this, are but whenever I feel the grumble I double my water intake, and will get a quick shower after I use the toilet I also take regular Epsom salt baths.

I hope you're able to find some relief

I had to have two fissure procedures under general. Do not allow yourself to be fobbed off. Ham up impact to your mental health, work and daily life. Insist you are referred for a fissure procedure. It was the only way mine would clear up. Had to do it twice as reappeared a few years later. Get your life back.

Timeforchangeithink · 19/05/2023 22:40

I tried everything including some £80 cream from USA. Thankfully due to unrelated cancer I got a stoma. I would rather have the stoma than AF.

matisses6fingers · 19/05/2023 22:41

OP that sounds so miserable and debilitating

can you be referred for surgery?

ODFOx · 19/05/2023 22:43

Worst 9 months of my life; and I've fought cancer since then.
If you have weight to lose, do it. Take soluble fibre every day. Eat the nutrients you need and no more. Keep moving, and when not moving be horizontal rather than vertical.
Use all the meds they offer to the letter. Good luck!

Blomonje · 19/05/2023 22:56

I’ve had them several times and cured them with Vaseline. It takes weeks though. Basically you split it again every time you go to the loo, so using Vaseline before you go helps to avoid that happening.

Ophy83 · 19/05/2023 23:01

Vaseline. Apply before going and after..also use wet wipes as more gentle than loo roll.

zeddybrek · 19/05/2023 23:03

DH had Botox and it helped get rid of them. I think it was stress induced.

CHPC · 09/08/2023 22:32

Have the doctors prescribed you rectogesic? My anal fissure was from child birth and nothing worked until the doctors finally relented after my multiple doctors trips and prescribed me that and it’s worked wonders.
