There is a special place in hell reserved for people who don't use headphones?

Admittedly, I had a bad night's sleep after too many glasses of wine last night, and my journey into the office was quite painful this morning, but even when I'm not being a grumpy cow this irritates the hell out of me...

What is it with people who don't use their headphones on public transport?

One girl chatting to her friend about her boyfriend problems on loudspeaker, so we all had the joy of hearing both sides of the conversation (he sounds like a bit of a shit tbh), then someone watching videos on Instagram on loudspeaker. Why do they think it's socially acceptable to make everyone else in the carriage listen to their nonsense?

Maybe I'm just getting old, but AIBU to think "JUST BY A PAIR OF BLOODY HEADPHONES!!!!"

Rant over.

People who play loud music in parks and beauty spots annoy the shit out of me too.

Sandybabey · 19/05/2023 16:02

The 45 minute bus journey with the moron watching Eastenders on loud speaker was fun.

I went up to a group of teens playing music on a train and asked them to turn it off.

They did. Immediately. I was surprised but in my experience, rude people haven’t been brought up correctly and never been told. So tell them. Worst that happens is they tell you to piss off 🤷‍♀️

Actually a man was murdered over an argument about music on the train. Not worth it.

The music is always shit as well

Would love to throw a brick at people who do this.

👏👏👏

Inadvertentlyspring · 19/05/2023 16:08

I feel like I was reading some thread on here about European countries where it is customary for people to tell you very directly when you break conventions/rules. Is it Switzerland or Germany or both? So if you mow your lawn on a Sunday someone will come and make you stop?

I mean the older I get the more I think that this might be acceptable, bossy, but acceptable.

LunaNorth · 19/05/2023 16:08

I was across the aisle from a prick doing this on a plane last weekend. Endless inane TikTok videos, while he juggled catarrh around his sinuses and crammed fistfuls of Haribo into his gob.

He was in his thirties and very nearly didn’t make it into his forties.

MarpleFan · 19/05/2023 16:18

@LunaNorth I had something similar a few years ago - the couple sitting behind me playing inane crap for the whole flight.

I feel an argument for ejector seats on commercial flights is valid.

I'm so with you on this. No one else seems bothered though now? I look around and everyone else is just...not noticing. So then I think I'm just old and grumpy too.
It can actually drive me to tears of frustration. I am totally stealing the network name suggestion above...

SisterWivesrus · 19/05/2023 15:53

YABU.

They're probably neurodiverse and/or anxious and can't use headphones due to whatever reason.

Nah, not really. Just anticipating the posters who will say that.

Too bad and probably unlikely

Usually just selfish

Why do their needs always trump everyone else

LightDrizzle · 19/05/2023 16:32

eurochick · 19/05/2023 15:54

My iPhone network is named "ffs use headphones" for this reason.

#passiveaggressive

Great idea!
I will steal this. Thank you.

Slightly different but a large portion of railway carriage occupants found out name, address, date of birth and full credit card details of someone who thought it was OK to put the information in the public domain during her mobile concedes with a retail company. Also health care professionals discussing patients on the way home, often with enough detail to identity them.

MarpleFan · 19/05/2023 16:38

@Spanielsarepainless yes! I so wanted to track down a man’s STBX wife and tell her where he was hiding his money so she wouldn’t get as much in the divorce. Idiots, the lot of them.

I am so sick of people assuming everyone else wants to listen to their shit. Hate it.

I went for a - what I thought would be a - quiet coffee the other day, sat down at a table next to a woman who was also there alone thinking I’d have some peace to read my book and she pulls out her phone and starts watching videos on Instagram or whatever on full blast! Why do people do it?!! It’s just so, so fucking rude.

LodiDodi · 19/05/2023 16:39

I was once on a bus where a young man was doing this from a phone and an old man took it out of his hand and threw it out of the window. Pretty bad but I had to stifle a laugh.

MarpleFan · 19/05/2023 16:40

@LodiDodi not all heroes wear capes!

On a caravan site a couple sat outside with their radio blaring. Other users asked them to turn it off, no go. They got the owner to tell them, so they did, but then switched it on again. Grrrrr.
remember the TV ads for cigars where the bloke wanted a quiet smoke, spoiled by drone/radio controlled boat etc etc., and he shot them down? Wish I had a secret laser device that would immobilise or destroy their equipment. It would give me great joy 😤😈

fitzwilliamdarcy · 19/05/2023 16:53

Cannot stand this. The worst is when two people are doing it, so you get two songs that make one horrible discordant NOISE.

I have to leave places if people have tablets playing TV because I can’t focus on a conversation or hear myself think if there’s something electronic chatting away. I can tune out background chat but that tinny speech/singing is the worst.

And for every person going ABLEISM!!!!, I have to leave because I am ND and my brain can’t tolerate it.

SecondClassmyass · 19/05/2023 16:57

When someone plays music on their phone I start playing baby shark on mine

MarpleFan · 19/05/2023 17:02

@SecondClassmyass I now have that in my head! Although I may well do this too.

MarpleFan · 19/05/2023 17:05

@FizzingAda my godfather had an, admittedly illegal, blocking device thing, years ago, specifically for when he was on trains and people were on their phones and it would block the signal - I may have to look into it....

This behaviour makes my blood boil. I think people know exactly what they are doing and don’t care. It’s the equivalent of a dog peeing on a lamppost to mark their territory.

musixa · 19/05/2023 17:08

Not quite the same thing but I'll never forget a train journey I had to make at the crack of dawn - work thing - where this bloke called his wife (who was still in bed) and announced he had phone minutes left over up so he'd carry on talking until he'd used them all up.

He then proceeded to a continuous narration of the view out of the window: 'We're just passing ASDA now; car park busy for this time of day; oh, there's IKEA and coming up now is an Esso station ... I think that's the M62 in the distance ...'

This went on for about 30 minutes, then I got up and went to another carriage because it was driving me barmy. I felt sorry for his wife, she'd probably been hoping for a lie-in 😆

ChaToilLeam · 19/05/2023 17:13

I snapped the other day on a train and gave a young man a good ticking off for this. Grateful looks from other travellers. I live in Germany though and I think the culture is rubbing off on me. 🇩🇪
