To have been really put off ASDA by the way they're treating their staff

I think it's terrible to ask staff to take pay cuts in the current economic climate. It has really put me off shopping at ASDA in future. AIBU?

So sainsburys and Asda are to be boycotted?

What about Tesco?

mrsgreggspastry · 19/05/2023 15:14

It seems ridiculous to me to be reducing the extra for overnight working - who would want to do it otherwise? It's terrible how pay and conditions are reducing for so many now.

Tesco pay £11.02. Shift leaders get £2 something more per hour. Bank holidays is only time and a quarter although double time if you were contracted to work on the Coronation Bank Holiday ( apparently).
Leave is ok. There’s also a personal day to take when you want. Free food and drink in the staffroom.
It’s pretty good imo.

I can understand Asda feeling the need to clean up who gets London weighting, but it’s bizarre they are doing it now and in this way when they’ve just given a big pay rise which I think was at least 60p an hour. Why didn’t they say to those staff that it was being absorbed rather than give an hourly rate increase and a few months later remove the allowance?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 19/05/2023 15:28

Well if everyone boycots Asda then they will lose their job anyway so the pay deduction won't matter.

The ASDA store nearest me fills night shifts much easier than their days/twilight, which is the reverse scenario of the supermarket I work for. They're about 7 miles apart.

I suppose it would be better if they could just see that customers weren't pleased about staff being treated like this. But it could be a mistake to boycott it for this reason, that's true.

People moan about Coop being expensive but they do treat their workers better than Asda. So far anyway. £10.90 for colleagues and Team Leaders get a £1 more. A discount card with 30% off everything except cigs and alcohol. About 7 week's holiday to include bank holidays which you can take whenever you want. Double time is paid for new year's Day and Easter Sunday. Everyone got an extra day for the coronation whether you worked it or not.

Ffsmakeitstop · 19/05/2023 21:47

That should say 30%discount on Coop branded goods and 10% on everything else. Two days a month it's double discount on everything.

My friend works in john Lewis. They earn £10.50 an hour, i think waitrose pay the same, its the same company.

jcyclops · 19/05/2023 22:48

The national Asda pay rate is £11/hour. In London (M25) it pays £12.17 and for 39 stores just outside the M25 (the subject of this thread) it pays £11.60/hour.

What does seem wrong is that Asda, just like all the other supermarkets, has uniform pricing across the country. Supermarkets may charge different prices according to the size of store (eg. Express, Local, Superstore) but the prices in the same type of store are the same everywhere. The only exception to this is that alcohol can cost more in Scotland due to the Scottish minimum pricing rules. Asda's staff costs are 10% more in London, and I am sure rent or property prices are also higher there. Why don't they charge more for groceries in these stores so they could then pay the staff fairly?

Nightworker23 · 19/05/2023 23:47

I'm a night shift worker at Asda, just outside of the M25. I get location despite not living In London. We have just received a 90p payrise and will receive a further 10p in July.

This is the first I've heard of scrapping location. However, nothing surprises me anymore. This is the last year of receiving a bonus as well. (Back in March)

ASDA is a bottom of the barrel supermarket. This isn't that surprising.

Why do you think that? Our local employs many elderly staff, staff with learning difficulties - the staff are amazing as is their employment program.

I'm disappointed at this news.

then why do you need to add your postcode before online shopping?

StillMedusa · 20/05/2023 01:10

My DS2 works for Asda. They gave him a job when many wouldn't (he has autism and some learning difficulties) And have supported him well over the last few years. And he brings in a better wage than I do as a TA!

BUT.. the conditions are continually changing and not for the better. I made him join the GMB.. the only union ASDA recognises.

Our current problem is a local one. After 6 years of good managers, the current one is a Grade A arsehole, who bullies the staff; they have lost loads as he picks on an individual until they quit, including some who have been there many years and know the job better than he does.

My Ds2 is his newest target and we are logging every incident ready to bring in the union :(

But that aside, ASDA have been a fairly decent employer to date.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/05/2023 01:10

Many places are expensive to live now. Someone has already mentioned Bristol and I would agree the rent is ridiculously high, and there is no weighting.
