To think this shouldn’t have happened to my partner at work ?

So he was presenting today in front of some firm that they were pitching ideas too. It was in his workplace. The projector has a pull down screen. When he pulled it, it fell down. The heavy metal bar part (that holds it on the wall at the top) caught his shoulder and arm. He’s fine just a bit tender and it bruised. Nothing major at all. AIBU to think a workplace should check equipment etc or was there some installation problem? Or is it these things happen type of idea.

These things happen...a worker may have checked just an hour before and it still might have happened.

Lostinplaces · 17/05/2023 22:28

Sometimes equipment fails, sometimes people are careless and don’t maintain equipment and it fails, sometimes accidents happen. What does your partner think?

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 17/05/2023 22:28

These things happen…. What do you want them to do about it now? Is it money you’re after?

MrsDoylesDoily · 17/05/2023 22:30

I'm not being funny but blimey, what a silly question.

It happens. Thankfully he's ok.

Lis1992 · 17/05/2023 22:32

No not money I’d never put in claims even if I was genuinely injured 🙄 I can’t stand over claim culture. Understand in genuine cases but it irks me. That wasn’t my angle at all! I meant is it something that happens to the equipment regularly. Is all! I don’t work in an office environment .

I've had mates cut fingers off and made less fuss. This week, I've sawn across my knuckles (private).strimed my leg (work), chisled my finger (private), kneeled on gravel which cut my knee, cut my finger taking cuttings....
He need s to man up, accidents happen

Dacadactyl · 17/05/2023 22:33

Another vote for these things happen. I mean, if it'd have caved his head in (God forbid) I'd be saying differently, but for me, a bruise would definitely be filed under these things happen.

Dacadactyl · 17/05/2023 22:35

That being said, he could report it to whoever is in charge of H&S for the accident lof, because if its been put up incorrectly then next time it could cause more serious injury.

anythinginapinch · 17/05/2023 22:36

Oh ffs shit happens

BCCGoAway · 17/05/2023 22:37

These things happen, but there should be some sort of accident log done showing he was injured at work and to fix the overhead?

Whitebeamtreelover · 17/05/2023 22:37

You’re his partner or his mother?

NCGrandParent · 17/05/2023 22:39

These things happen but that doesn't mean he needs to act like nothing happened. It needs to be logged as a health and safety incident and the equipment checked

Triggerfinger · 17/05/2023 22:40

I can’t see why you would have posted this unless you were potentially intending to pursue some sort of claim. Why else would you ask?

This.

Triggerfinger · 17/05/2023 22:41

An accident report form needs to be completed. That’s about it.

Flufs · 17/05/2023 22:43

There’s lots of legislation around employees providing a safe environment. Your DH could have been seriously injured - what if his head had been knocked? If I was your DHs manager I’d want to know what failed, why the issue wasn’t picked up previously and what can be done to make the equipment safe for future use. Most importantly I’d want to know your DH is fine and if he needs any support with his injury.

WhenTheBeeStings · 17/05/2023 22:45

Was it user error or equipment failure?
Either way it should be logged in the accident book.

TJCar · 17/05/2023 22:46

I'm a health & safety bod, and I say no it shouldn't have happened but sometimes stuff goes wrong. Make sure he reports it as an accident. At the very least any other similar type of fixings should be checked. Hope he's OK, and his pitch landed better than the screen!

Minihippyme89 · 17/05/2023 22:48

It needs to be reported so the equipment can be checked. A similar incident happened years ago to my dad, a piece of equipment toppled over and bruised someone. It wasn’t fixed. Until it toppled over again and caused my dad a serious head injury, he was awarded thousands in compensation, that head injury changed his life forever.

Lis1992 · 17/05/2023 22:59

To the people who said to report out of concern for another accident- YES. You actually understand my point. It could happen again or it could have hit on the head. We know accidents happen. He told his boss and it’s being looked at.

Yeah...

WonderingWanda · 17/05/2023 23:07

It sounds like something that could have been worse but it's unusual for things like projectors and screens to fall down. I work in a school not an office but we use this sort of equipment. No one does regular checks on whether it's still properly attached to the ceiling as far as I'm aware. It sounds like a freak accident to me.

Swrigh1234 · 17/05/2023 23:55

What is your question? Do metal bars fall off when people pull projector screens down in offices? How can anyone answer such a specific question?

I don't know about anyone else here but I'm really struggling to take you and these questions seriously.
