--- to want a toilet that's accessible to guests/children?

OK, a bit TIC as it's really not my problem! But just wondering if my neighbour has shot himself in the foot ---

He's a builder, bought the house next door to mine and has knocked it around and put it back on the market (though has taken 2 years to do so). It started off as a 2 + 1/2 bedroom house with a full bathroom on the first floor, where all bedrooms also were.

It's now a 4 bedroom house - 2 on the first floor, 2 in the new attic conversion. He's put a toilet in on the ground floor, and an ensuite for the master bedroom on the 1st floor (really it's just a wet room, it's not very big, but has a shower, toilet and basin). And the "family bathroom", on the first floor, has just a bath (with a fancy shower top attachment but no overhead shower) and a basin - but no toilet!

So if you were staying and sleeping anywhere other than the master bedroom, you'd have to schlep down to the ground floor if you needed the loo in the night. Would this put you off? It would me!

YABU -- just plait your legs or use a gazunder
YANBU - of course you want a toilet that's easily accessible to most of the bedrooms!

Yes I would expect a family toilet on the middle floor.

maximist · 17/05/2023 21:22

That sounds bizarre. No way would I buy that, and I live on my own - my guests need a loo in their bathroom!

TableTime99 · 17/05/2023 21:22

My last house only had a toilet in the en suite, that was the only bathroom in the whole house. Lots of old Victorian houses are like this. It's a bit annoying but if you love the rest of the house you put up with it. It'll probably still sell just fine.

Grumpigal · 17/05/2023 21:23

How bizarre, you need a toilet in the family bathroom surely?

im sure some people wouldn’t mind this at all - those who don’t have regular guests, happy to use en-suite and maybe don’t have young children? But like the majority of people would want a toilet in the main bathroom?

mynameiscalypso · 17/05/2023 21:23

He is clearly not the kind of person who ever realises when they're in the bath that they suddenly need a poo.

The last house I lived at had a toilet downstairs and nothing upstairs.

It was a pain in the butt really especially at night

Defo need a toilet on the middle floor, and preferably the top floor too. I’ve never heard of a ‘family bathroom’ not actually having a toilet in it. Is this a thing? I wouldn’t buy this house for sure, don’t care how snazzy the bathroom is if it doesn’t have a toilet!

whoateallthecookies · 17/05/2023 21:30

As someone who spends more time than I should browsing rightmove, it's surprising how many relatively new homes have bedrooms with no toilet on the same floor - there might be an ensuite to another bedroom, or it might be that there isn't full plumbing to the top floor. An accessible toilet on every floor is a must for us, and I don't think we're that unusual.

Wenfy · 17/05/2023 21:34

It doesn’t take much to install a toilet if you already have the plumbing installed (even if it is capped off). I imagine no builder would be so stupid they wouldn’t do that.

My OH grew up in a rather posh 5 bedroom house. There was just one toilet in the whole house and it was in its own room next door to the bathroom. These were on a landing sort of midway between the ground floor and the first floor where all the bedrooms were.
.
It did seem odd to me that there was no toilet in the bathroom. I had never seen that before, but what seems even stranger with hindsight is that a house of that size only had one toilet, though this never seemed to be a problem even when we were all staying there!

It was certainly more practical than the set-up described by the OP.
