What do do with DD

DD is in an above elbow cast for six weeks. On her dominant side too 🤦🏻‍♀️ (Bloody monkey bars!).
she is going stir crazy! We are normally quite active and weekends are usually the beach and playgrounds galore. It’s only day 4 and she’s fed up and wants to go out and do something. What sort of activities can I do with her that involves her going out but not getting cast wet, not playgrounds obviously or stuff that requires her to paint, draw, write etc!

Cinema?

Walks in woods, picnics, museums, cinema, boating if you have a lake near you, plane shows/firework shows maybe? You could try some arty things that are not so dependant on her dominant hand, so collage or mosaic making? Dancing - you can copy Just Dance videos on YouTube if you haven't got a console. Get some stuff for the garden maybe - giant connect 4 or hopscotch.

Treasure/scavenger hunt. Hidden City are brilliant if you have them in your area (possibly just London) and Treasure Trails are also great and available almost everywhere.

If she likes it you can help her to make one for someone else, lots of fun in the planning of them.

You can still do the beach, but just skim stones, collect shells/fossils, walk etc.

National Trust places or other local places of interest, galleries/museums/aquarium etc.

Theatre

We recently had this but with an 11yo. I thanked god it was winter as I had no idea how we would’ve got through in the summer, sorry. Basically we reset being at home (previously she was playing football x2, taekwondo and skateboarding and spending the rest of her time at the skate park- it felt like her whole world had fallen apart, she couldn’t even play her guitar ☹️) Found it really hard as even Lego needs 2 hands!

We Spent a lot time doing different crafts badly and with my help, watched a lot of tv, learnt to throw with her wrong hand for darts and bowling, visited the cinema more than we would usually. We also learnt how to play many new board games
it has been a long recovery for dd (with 2ops) and only 6mths later is she starting to get back to normal, it really knocked her confidence and how she sees herself.
so this is probably no help but I sympathise with you and remember this will pass

Get a waterproof cast cover. They are fantastic. My daughter had one when she broke her leg and we were still able to go swimming. They have a neoprene cuff.

PoppityBoo · 17/05/2023 21:46

I second the waterproof cast cover. My daughter broke her wrist yet was still able to body board in the sea in Devon with one of these on - kept it bone dry!!

Beautyhoard · 17/05/2023 21:47

Is her hand not free to draw/paint etc?
