AIBU - upgrading room on company paid trip?

I have some time in a hotel coming up which work will pay for. AIBU to ask the hotel to allow me to pay a separate fee to upgrade the room so my husband and kids can come and we can spend evenings together? I'm not sure what company policy is and don't want to raise it as it probably seems grabby!?

Is it the done thing or not?

I used to process all expenses for my department and senior colleagues would do things like this when attending overseas conferences. I would often be given flight receipts with additional passenger fares scored out, or hotel confirmations with handwritten price calculations, etc. The company would only cover economy travel but most of them would pay the difference out of pocket to upgrade.

Just ask your manager/HR/Finance, bright and breezy. The worst they can say is no.
