I am really undecided...a great job has come up in my local authority. Its something I would be really interested in and is about 8k more than I am on in my current role.
HOWEVER....
I love my current job. I work from home - with travel out and about at times that suit me. I am here when my older primary aged kids get in from school and if I am a bit late they can take care of themselves for an hour. I get to walk the dog in the morning and start my day in a leisurely way. The company I work for is really decent, I have lovely colleagues, very realistic targets and a very positive and supportive environment.

The LA Job would require 5 days in the office for the first 3-6mths then 2 days a week can be at home. You have to clock in (I know its that way in many places but something about it just irks me!!) and is probably a lot more structured than I am currently used to.

It might seem clear cut but I really do like the job description of the new role. Obviously its more money (but I might need to spend some on childcare for a year ie. afterschool) and I am trying to get a mortgage at the moment so the new role would allow for a little more in the budget.

Im genuinely torn! (You might advise me to apply and then weigh up the pros and cons but if anyone has done a LA Application and interview you will know that it will take me hours to complete not to mention interview prep)

Final point....I 'work' over the summer but it really is a slow time of year and I can have my children here no bother - if I got the other job I would need summer childcare.

So ....?

Are you a single parent?

greennotepad · 17/05/2023 16:25

Have you worked out what 8k is in terms of take home monthly pay? Will it cover the additional childcare costs?

Dixiechickonhols · 17/05/2023 16:27

I’d apply and then see. Without LA experience you may not get it or there may be an internal candidate. If you don’t you’ll always think what if.
Write pros and cons. You might be able to buy additional leave and better pension in LA role.

LucyIoo · 17/05/2023 16:46

If you're on good enough money for all of the things you need and want, I'd be tempted to stay. You may regret it given that you like where you are ao much. Money isn't everything.

Jadetreesbringluck · 17/05/2023 16:55

Yes I am a single parent. I did some calculations and think I would take home an extra 380 a month.

I'm managing quite well on current salary. Can afford holidays and savings but of course that much extra would be nice!

Did you factor in pension? My take home is less than online calculators as pension contribution is higher than average.
I’d go for it and then revisit if you get offered it.

Lcb123 · 17/05/2023 17:08

I’d apply and go from there.

IamAlso4eels · 17/05/2023 17:18

How much of that £380 would be eaten up by childcare, pet care and increased commuting costs from being in the office?

Personally, I'd stay where I'm happy and where I have understanding employers who allow me the level of flexibility you've described. These things have value in their own right.

Could you speak to your employer about a payrise? Let them know you're considering a role elsewhere due to £380 a month more pay and ask if they're willing to review what they pay you.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 17/05/2023 17:41

I definitely wouldn’t trade all of that flexibility for an additional £8k while kids are still primary age. Being in office 5 days, clocking in, sounds awful.

Equalitea · 18/05/2023 07:11

It would be a no from me. £8000 doesn’t sound a lot when you will have to factor in childcare and trips to the office, let alone the extra stress etc.

This.

I think changing up might be good. I’m surprised the job is £8k more for an easier job though. They don’t tend to pay as well as the private sector so definitely check out how much you expected to do.
Clocking in works well in LA’s. You end up accruing lots of time to take off for all the little bits of overtime.

The commute would decide it for me though. Think on to when it’s winter, dark, de icing the car. How long will it take then.
And walking the dog before work. How much of a morning person are you.
Good luck if you decide to go for it.
