That's not my name

I started a new job a few weeks ago, all going well.

It's a job sharing role and for the first few shifts I was alongside the colleague I'm sharing with, for training.

She was lovely and helpful, but has told everyone my name is Emma. My name isn't Emma.😬

When I introduced myself to a few others with my real name in front of her, she didn't cotton on, she actually said herself she's bad with names! No kidding!

Now most of the staff are calling me Emma, do I just...carry on?!

It’s a particular annoyance of mine when people get my name wrong. Just keep correcting them until they get it right.

I have a 'work name' that isn't (quite) my real name. I assumed everyone knew until my boss had to phone IT to get me access to another computer system. She got very irate insisting of course I existed, I'd worked there years, and it was ridiculous they didn't have a record for me. She came over to check how I spelt my name, and only then realised I wasn't actually called that. IT of course had me down under my correct name.

Please tell us she sheepishly went back to her desk after apologising to you for calling you by an incorrect name all this time and that she had her tail firmly between her legs!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/05/2023 12:24

Chandler in Friends had the same problem!

Conkersinautumn · 17/05/2023 12:29

I'm definitely passive to the point of needing therapy at work. I'd happily roll with a new name - they'd never bloody find me social media etc. Could help avoid the work trying to get into real life thing nicely

HouseofHolbein · 17/05/2023 12:30

I wear a name badge at work. One of my (not close) work colleagues calls me Joanne. This is nothing like my name. Oddly enough she manages to message me on Facebook if she needs a query answered which is obviously my actual name 🤷‍♀️

LookItsMeAgain · 17/05/2023 12:32

What bugs the shite out of me is when you write an email and you sign off and then the person you're sending the email to either disregards your name or spells it incorrectly!
That really is poor.

Ah honestly, I've been called it for years, there's no issue. My Father called it me when I was a tiny girl, and someone at work slipped up once years ago, saw my eyes light up and realised it struck a chord with me. So it just stuck. New boss obviously heard my old boss calling me it (merged departments) and assumed it was my name. I'd answer to it more typically then my proper name these days!

Think along the lines of....
Everyone calls me = Su
Dad/Old boss/New boss/Close friends = Surie
Official name that NO-ONE uses (apart from IT and payroll!) = Susan

I actuallygot very close to changing it officially by deed poll a few years ago, but couldn't be faffed contacting the bank, passport office etc, so just left it.

Is that because it’s pronounced Bouquet not Buck-it?

You’d be shocked by the amount of people who mispronounce Bouquet.

@BoredToTearsAgain I manage a Jeannie, I took over her management from an agency, first time I had to contact our payroll for her they called her Jean and I saw that's on her record, she'd worked for us for nearly a year as a temp by that point.
When I asked her what she prefers her story was similar to yours. She's Jean at home and to friends and family, but at her last job there was another Jean, so she became Jeannie. It went down well, she realised she liked it so when she applied for this job she put preferred name Jeannie on her forms. She's an older lady but very sparky and active, when I think of the name Jean that's not what comes to mind.
I wonder if there are lots of people out there with work names?!

mycatsanutter · 17/05/2023 15:41

If you don't correct her , you will become Emma . When my son started Uni the newly formed football team were introducing themselves to each other , one lad introduced himself as Lewis. one lad said ' you don't look like a Lewis you look like a Joel ' he said he wasn't really bothered , so for 3 years at Uni he was Joel to everyone and Lewis at home 😂🤷‍♀️

BoredToTearsAgain · 17/05/2023 16:17

@UndercoverCop I love the Jeanie story, so similar to mine. I'm actually looking for a new job currently and seriously considering applying as Joanie again!

I had a shift today and even the manager that hired me called me Emma! I did say to her, you know my name is Ruth, not Emma? She said 'oh yes but I heard everyone calls you Emma!'

I think I might have to just adopt it as my work name...I think I do look like an Emma 😂

I'd have thought the answer was obvious. You let people know your colleague has made a mistake and you are intact 'Yourname'. If anyone asks who Emma is or will she be joining you just joke that you're happy for the imaginary Emma to do all the work as long as you get paid for it.

Or change your name

Mountainpika · 17/05/2023 17:04

I worked as a supply teacher. One head always called me by another first name. He had no idea why. I just answered to it when he spoke to me.

Hotpinkangel19 · 17/05/2023 17:11

Shelby2010 · 17/05/2023 08:14

Surely your work email address will be:
firstnane.surname@

so if you don’t correct them now it will get mighty confusing.

On the other hand, if you’ve always wanted to be an ‘Emma’ now is the perfect opportunity!

Not everyone has a work email address! Shop workers, nursery staff, etc. not everyone works in an office.

This thread started off ridiculous and now you've managed to take it to a whole new level.

Just tell everyone firmly what your name is and get on with your life/job.

BashfulClam · 17/05/2023 17:27

We had a girl in our office with a double first name so think of ‘Emily-Marie’ she said ‘my name is never Emily or Marie it is Emily-Marie or EM’. A guy in our team insisted in calling her Emily, I hear him with a new start ‘I’ll just introduce you to Emily!’ I think she was ready to stab him in the face.
