Does this need a GP? And would you be concerned?

My son came home with a bruised ear yesterday. Annoyingly I didn't notice it until after we got home but it must have happened there as it wasn't there when we left in the morning (and he's not hurt himself at home, I expect he'd have cried when this happened surely?!). They didn't mention anything when he was collected.

I've freaked myself out online about build up on the cartilage and it possibly needing to be seen.

But I'm also pretty pee'd that this has happened and seemingly no one has noticed.

So basically AIBU to bother the GP about this but also to be questioning nursery about what's happened here? He's only just 2 so cannot tell me yet.

He's a nightmare for staying still so pictures are hard to get, but it seems to be mainly at the back of his ear.

Also, he is pointing to it occasionally and saying 'ow' so it's obviously still bothering him today although he does seem his normal self outside of that.

I dont think I would see a GP for that unless it started to get worse instead of better.

Would you be concerned that it's seemingly happened at nursery but no one has noticed or mentioned it?

Yes I would.ask them about it but unfortunately they can't see everything.

How did it happen??? Also, is his head near the ear OK?

I have absolutely no idea because I suspect it happened at nursery but no one said anything when he was collected (and I unfortunately only noticed once he was already home). I'm certain it hasn't happened at home as he hasn't been alone obviously and he hasn't cried / hurt himself.

The head directly behind the ear was a little red / slightly bruised too yesterday too but that seems to have gone down. The ear itself is worse today than yesterday.

I'd question the nursery but I don't think I'd see a GP.

Ear197 · 17/05/2023 07:27

Thanks. The only reason I panicked and thought GP was because I'd read bruising to the cartilage can cause a build up and should be seen, but I'll keep an eye on it instead for now and go if the bruising doesn't ease.

I just don't know how it could have happened and no one be aware. Even if they didn't see exactly what happened, he'd have been crying I'd have thought and it must have been a fairly good whack on something to cause the bruise.

I wonder if another child has pinched his ear? That’s quite a decent amount of quite localised bruising.
Id have a word with nursery but I imagine occasionally things get missed, particularly if children don’t cry or make a fuss when they happen.

Sleeepdeprived · 17/05/2023 07:37

As PP said I’d call the nursery to find out what happened but I don’t think it’s worth a GP call unless it doesn’t start to get better

You are almost correct here.
It is not normal bruising that causes damage to the cartilage but rather a soft boggy haematoma. The haematoma causes lack of blood supply to the cartilage which can lead to "cauliflower ear", to avoid this the haematoma needs to be drained.
The photos you have posted look like a normal bruise and does not require treatment

Okay thank you! Probably why you shouldn't Google these things 😀
