Which job?

Whatdidshesay · 16/05/2023 22:15

Job 1: semi skilled, 'nice' job title, some stress, paying £13ph, 3 days a week, 45 min commute each way

Job 2: not so skilled, rubbish job title, no stress, paying £11ph, 3 days a week, 5 mins from home

I've been offered both and I wanted to ask what others would do!

Which one has most potential for promotion?

JupiterFortified · 16/05/2023 22:17

What will your costs be like for commuting to the job which is 45 min away OP?

Which one has most potential for promotion?

Good question - I'd say both, in different ways, although I wouldn't be interested in promotion at the moment at all.

Job 2

Job 2.

I drive, so the costs for fuel would be approximately £8.50 total per daily shift.

Job 1 sounds like it has the most potential for progression in future of you want it. I'd take that one.

XelaM · 16/05/2023 22:24

Job 2 for sure. You'll be spending the extra money on the commute anyway. What's the point? And a "no stress"-job is priceless

pumpkinpieinmyeye · 16/05/2023 22:25

Job 2

Oysterbabe · 16/05/2023 22:26

I'd take job 2. I wouldn't put up with stress for £13 an hour.

Whatdidshesay · 16/05/2023 22:28

Thanks very much for the replies!

I asked a friend and she was surprised I was even considering job 2 because job 1 'sounds so much better' - from an ego point yes absolutely it does, but job 2 would be enjoyable and it's around the corner, no commute would be amazing.

What are the jobs, just for context?

I would take the one closer to home if you aren't concerned about promotion and just want something easy!

Gamechanger2019 · 16/05/2023 22:30

Job 2 defo!

Based on 8hr days before tax/ni
Job 1 = £96 a day after commute
Job 2 = £87 a day after commute

i’d say less stress and more time for you is worth the loss of £9 per day!! Which won’t really be £9 in your actual pocket!

you can’t buy time

Awrite · 16/05/2023 22:34

Stress, plus 90 minutes per day commuting plus £8.50 per day petrol all for an extra £2 per hour?

No chance

Job 2 gets my vote.

UndercoverCop · 16/05/2023 22:39

What's your long term plan and which job helps you to get on the right track for that?
I've taken jobs where the commute or travel time equal a reduction in pay or stagnation but have been very good springboards on to better things. However not everyone is looking for career progression. If you just want a job, and that's all you want for at least 4/5 years, job 2, if you can tolerate the lack of stress/urgency/skill development. I've never been very good at that.

You say job 2 is a rubbish job title and not skilled at all? One of the worst jobs I ever had was relatively well paid for a summer admin job, but I could do all of the work in a couple of hours without even trying too hard, I buffed my nails so much that summer they became painful. I was so bored if it had been any longer than the summer I couldn't have stuck it out. Having said that smart phones didn't exist then....

Whatdidshesay · 16/05/2023 22:52

My long term plan involves working for myself, neither job really aids in that sense and luckily I have investment passive income so financially I'm okay, but I do need to work for my mental health, for routine etc.

Job 2 is busy although low skilled, I certainly wouldn't have chance to be bored!

Job 2 all day!!!

UsingChangeofName · 16/05/2023 22:59

If you purely want to "earn some money for now", then job 2.

Longer term, I'd be thinking "no stress" probably = boring / no stimulation / no challenge / not very interesting, so personally I'd probably look at Job 1, but that depends on where you are in life in terms of if you have dc, what age you are, if you are looking to be at work for another 30 years or so, if this is a stop gap, etc etc. Some people like some challenge / adrenalin in their work.

Makingamess4212 · 16/05/2023 23:12

Another vote for job 2 !
