To take a day off because I am tired?

Undecided. 32 weeks pregnant and my sleep is very poor. I tend to wake up around midnight and stay awake for around four hours, am in quite a lot of discomfort at night.

It has a culminating effect and I feel wiped out. Acceptable to have a day off to rest/sleep?

Absolutely acceptable. Have a rest!

BrokeAssMum · 16/05/2023 18:31

Absolutely. You are pregnant and you and baby take priority. You cannot be penalised for sick leave in pregnancy

ViaRia01 · 16/05/2023 18:33

I think it’s probably fine to stay home to rest and recover if you’re honest about it to your employer. I’d use words like fatigue and whatever pregnancy-related issues are specifically keeping you awake … restless legs, heartburn, etc.

your employer should record it separately as pregnancy related illness. There’s a point at which any pregnancy related sickness will cause your mat leave to begin but I’m not sure when that point is. So maybe check that first…?

SnackSizeRaisin · 16/05/2023 18:35

I would say it depends on your job, but didn't you have all weekend to rest and it's only Tuesday?

Once the baby is born you will probably go to work on very little sleep for a long time, without any chance to catch up at weekends.

But if it's a job where you're on your feet all day or are driving or operating machinery then take time off. If it's a desk job then I think it's a bit lazy personally. Assuming no actual health conditions

For 20 years I was a go to work no matter what person. But realised you don't get any extra thanks for it and was treated the same as people that were sick every Friday.
Now if I want a duvet day, I have it.

I believe it's the last 4 weeks of your pregnancy

Imjustsotirednow · 16/05/2023 18:45

36 weeks yes … I have a 2.5 year old. I don’t get to rest at weekends 😭

You should get to rest at the weekends when heavily pregnant! Why isn’t your partner/husband taking the two year old out to give you a break at weekends? Are they working then? If so is there anyone else who can take your child for a bit at weekends so you can rest?

Roselilly36 · 16/05/2023 18:47

I wouldn’t take time off for tiredness, that was related to my pregnancy, tbh. Pregnancy is uncomfortable. Thankfully for me it was manageable, I appreciate that’s not always the case for every mum to be. Perhaps consider going off on maternity leave earlier OP. Particularly if you have other children at home that you are caring for. Good luck & many congratulations.

Roselilly36 · 16/05/2023 18:48

X post, just seen your update, I had two under two, I can empathise.

Judgemental much?! Just because one person would be ok pushing through with tiredness in pregnancy at a desk job doesn't mean another can

Mutabiliss · 16/05/2023 18:49

Pregnancy tiredness is like nothing else. Take the day off, why not?

I disagree that it’s lazy. But even if it is, so what 🤷‍♀️

@SnackSizeRaisin is obviously a much better person than you. Well done @SnackSizeRaisin !!! You must be very proud of yourself.

Back in the real world.... yes, you should absolutely take a day off. Look after yourself x
