To think that a U certificate children's film should not have swearing in.

Dh bought the Shrek 2 DVD last week to play on the coach on a trip down to London. The children on the coach were aged between 6 and 14 and we specifically chose a U film, not a PG one. I was astounded when not too far into the film I heard 2 swear words shouted out.

Luckily no-one complained but it could have landed us in trouble. I know that dd's school show U Disney films and we (possibly foolishly) assumed that Shrek would be along the same lines.

We thought the film was great and very funny, but I was just a bit shocked. I'm not a prude, but when it is other people's children you have to be careful.

Harry Potter has got "piss off" in it, not sure of the rating but i was when i heard it, now that is swearing isnt it.

depends on the context. If you say "I've hurt myself, look, my finger is all bloody" that's not swearing. If you say "oh bloody hell, I've forgotten to switch the telly off" that's swearing.

I wouldn't expect it on a U certificate.

Lots of words that used to be swearing in my day are becoming more and more mainstream though. When I was a kid, you could get away with "flipping" and that was about it. Nowadays, they say "crap", "bloody", "arse" all sorts during the day and get away with it. (My mum would give me a slap if she heard me saying any one of those - good job she's never heard me saying "fucking cunting sainsbury's" )

Agree with whoever said that Uc is the cert for films more specifically aimed at younger kids

(Can't remember the last time I saw a Uc though)

U films can still be scary/have cartoon violence/some language/whatever

I think YABU - you should have checked, and it does say "mild language"

Also I think YABU to be worried about 6-14yos hearing the word "bloody" tbh

I'm far more worried when U films show characters getting beaten up etc

IIRC one of the early Harry Potter films had Ron saying "bloody hell" which he didn't in the book. Also a film with the same actor in (about a farting spaceman?) was littered with bloodys. It isn't appropriate when said by a child IMO. I don't think the American scriptwriters "get" that it is considered swearing in England.

bobsmum LOL at thinking the Simpsons is for children.
